Original List Prices of IBM (and some Lenovo) era ThinkPads
Original List Prices of IBM (and some Lenovo) era ThinkPads
This has always intrigued me... looking back, tried to build a database from web IBM List prices and old IBM PDF's with list prices.
Also include lowest street prices from Magazines at the time if can find.
Model intro dates I think are accurate within 3-6 months in most cases (so very occasionally may be shown in the year above its launch, never behind) - will use the pdf refs to get accurate dating later
Prices may vary according to config - but tried to find the average spec. price for those without any details.

I thought CNET published list prices in their reviews. Still a lot of those floating around on the internet.

Thinkpad4by3 Thanks for the addition, added!
MikalE, CNET do use when possible.. however old PDF scans of PC Mag have been extremely useful as IBM frequently used them to advertise direct to consumer! Also archive.org... before around 2001 not many net reviews as they were yet to come...

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the prices for an absolute bare-bones stripped model and the same model with every bell and whistle they offered?

Re: Original List Prices of IBM era ThinkPads
Yes.. but it gets complex ))
I thought we could just give a range $xxx - $xxx where we can put the config of the top-end model in initially (like the 760CS, 755CD etc), and then break it out a little?
Pricing varies hugely even within little time also... some of the "7" series almost halved in price before they were discontinued... probably many others.
It's a pity this can't be universally edited so people can just add as they feel...

You can probably use the internet archive to find other prices on Lenovos site.

Busy looking )))
It's quite interesting seeing the evolution as well, roughly knew it but this definitely puts it in perspective for me (and hopefully for some others).
Also interesting the huge price of some models.

Re: Original List Prices of IBM (and some Lenovo) era ThinkPads
Are you telling me that the 300 isn't a TP because it was made by Zenith?
Zenith made some of the most quality laptops of all time, definitely onpar with IBM's standard. I give it my own Thinkpad badge of approval if I had such a thing.

Well I put in list...
Wasn't sure as it wasn't IBM manufactured, but it did have the ThinkPad moniker so it must be a ThinkPad ))
Yes Zenith laptops were first rate!
I withdraw the comment though )))

Re: Original List Prices of IBM (and some Lenovo) era ThinkPads
Thank you. "Not a Thinkpad" implies inferior hardware to me, even though it didn't in that scenario.
Now the iSeries machines were actually manufacutered by Acer. Those weren't on-par with IBM's standard but cheaper and had a trackpoint. Known for failing hinges, something REAL Thinkpads rarely have.

The R30 and R40 Series were also manufactured by Acer.
Re: Original List Prices of IBM (and some Lenovo) era ThinkPads
I have added everything to date, will go through the PSREF to make sure the dates are correct (at least to year of introduction initially).
Still a few machines to add from the old days, as well as breaking out the some of the models into individual versions, but on models till 2006 probably 80% or more complete.
Have learned much from this little exercise.

Inaccuracy!! The T61 wasn't the first one with widescreen LCD. The Z60 series of machines had widescreen with P-M Banias chips.

Re: Original List Prices of IBM (and some Lenovo) era ThinkPads
FWIW, my I-Series 2176-1450 was about 2K back in the day new. I believe I got it as a slight discount under that from CDW. I still miss that old machine...
