help me find a laptop For Aunt

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Fri Nov 24, 2017 2:26 pm

I gave my Aunt an HP Mini netbook I bought at the end of the Netbook era but since its so slow now and not worth more than about $30 i'm just gonna get rid of it... i'm now on the lookout for a computer that is small and portable, has long battery life and is more powerful then her Mini.... she takes it to the shop in her town to do her web browsing and she takes it when she goes to visit family in the big city.... since she is older and only uses it for web browsing and to load her photos from her camera it doesn't need to be any more powerful than the mini was (ok anything but an Atom CPU!) but I was thinking about getting maybe an 11.6" or 12" laptop with a lower resolution screen and my first thought was to go with a Lenovo Thinkpad x140e but not only are those machines way too expensive, I don't know the AMD line at all.. I don't know what AMD is equivalent to what Intel i-series... my next choice was going to be an x131e with i3 good machine I owned one a few years ago and sold it for an x220 with mid range i5 CPU since it was still too slow for my needs but these x131e with i3 aren't popular at all and are nowhere to be found on ebay.... I think at this point I'm gonna look into HP machines again (Elitebook/Probooks) alongside some Lenovo Thinkpads but if anybody knows of some good suggestions let me know I'm on the lookout to build a computer from parts again for less then $60

Any of the good brand using i5-xxxxU at least 2GHz or so (15W) processor in a 13.3" format is perfect mix of performance and 6 cell battery runtime in 8 hours plus range. I liked business oriented HP line, other option is Dell latitude. Make sure to specify 16GB ram when ordering new notebook in two modules to enable dual channel mode important for graphics performance, SSD is a given, 480GB is sweet spot based on your Aunt's profile.

Avoid Asus, Toshiba and line of notebooks, they have poor parts availability when they get older, otherwise Lenovo does not have 2 memory slots for the 15W range and missing 13.3" LCD size.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

that would be nice but I'm looking at defiantly going with a 12" machine with maybe a 1366x768 display but I may go with an HP Elitebook 2560p or a Lenovo x220 both with an i5-2410m (or lowest i5) I know battery life will suffer but portability is more a priority than battery... Dell has never really been my favorite their designs and support suck... I'm going to go with 8 GB of ram and a 320 HDD but what else can be suggested as i'm building this all from a bin of parts and need to keep the price as low as possable

X201s with WXGA+ would be your ideal machine.
12.5" LCD with 1440x900 16:10 resolution.
Very decent battery life as well.
Contact forum member Edward Mendelson, he has one for sale (not advertised yet).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

the first gen core i series don't they run really hot? I know my T410 does.... I may get the x201s I'm just wondering how good that would be with 4gb ram and an HDD? I'm thinking of the i7-640lm if I can get a good price on one but it depends on what he wants and how it's configured

Why don't you ask him?

I use one of those X201s (with i5) machines daily, no problem with heat whatsoever.
Clean fan, decent thermal paste (Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut) and W7 are a great combo for keeping things cool.
And if it's only for Auntie, you don't necessarily want the fastest CPU available.

The i7-640lm is dual core runs at 2.13ghz its even slower than the i5-520m in the x201 as that's a full power 2.4ghz CPU plus the i7-640lm is a lower wattage CPU hense the "L" in the model number... Thanks I will contact him and keep you posted
