Looking to Buy Thinkpad

#1 Post by linuxology » Sat Nov 25, 2017 1:15 pm

I have ~$400 budget for a laptop for my daughter. I want to buy my daughter a thinkpad T-series based on my prior experiences. What model would get me in my budget? I want to get an SSD and would like it to run Windows 10. I have an extra copy of Windows 10 laying around in the case I need to load one up. Thanks.

first, welcome to the forum.. :)
next, new or used..?
i don't think there are many new thinkpads for $400 more or less..
BUT there are a bunch of $400 used thinkpads.. for me i would find a good used X1 carbon.. and i would avoid the gen 2 with the crappy keyboard..
otherwise roam our marketplace and see whats there if used is OK for you..

You could start with a good condition T520 or W520 and improve upon that with upgrades. These are still smoking machines when configured for performance. It will also keep you within your budget.

I bought and upgraded my T440p for about $300 (needs more parts but it's usable now) I have the one with Nvidea GT 730m graphics but if you don't get the one with Nvidea CPU it can be bought with a low end i5 for around $150 but it may need a battery, a hard drive/ SSD and maybe ram... my T430 wasn't very much cheaper IMO so unless you really want the design of the older models i'd say the T440p is the best bang for your money in semi-parts condition... I even have an intel only graphics board for the T440p i'll give it away just pay for shipping
