Puzzling wifi login

#1 Post by icebag » Wed Jun 26, 2019 9:50 am

This question concerns a strange wifi connection on a Lenovo 120s-14iap. I can't figure it out and I am hoping that someone on this forum can.

First, I need to describe my wifi setup. The router is used for all wifi connections. The router also has an ethernet connection to a powerline plug (1); the other powerline plug (2) is connected by ethernet to the TV. Plug (2) also acts as a wifi extender. The password on the wifi extender is different to the password on the router. I have almost never used the extended wifi, I just connect to the router.

I bought the 120s on Ebay. It had been restored to factory settings by the previous owner. The first thing I did with it was to connect it to the router, play with it a bit, then put it away. The next day I switched it back on -- and noticed that it was now connected to the wifi extender network.

First thought: that is impossible as I haven't typed in the wifi extender password. In fact I don't even know the wifi extender password without looking it up. But I have checked and the 120s is connected, with the correct password, to the wifi extender network.

Second thought: could anyone else in the house have done it? No, because there is nobody else in the house with the any technical knowledge.

Third thought: I haven't a clue!

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Does your laptop and any other laptops in your household have Windows 10? I remember a feature that allowed automatically sharing WiFi passwords with trusted peers-- I've yet to see it in action, because in our house there's only one computer with Windows 10, while the rest are Win 7 and Linux.

In pieces: two retired but working X61Ts

Yes! I should have mentioned that the 120s is using Windows 10 and there is one other Windows 10 machine in the house. That may be the answer.

Interestingly, I did check to see if a recently acquired Chromebook knew the wifi extender password: it didn't. So the Windows 10 peer sharing sounds very likely.

Thank you for that. The problem was beginning to irritate me.

And I bet you feel really good about it. :)

As far as I'm told, this feature (Wi-Fi Sense) was removed from Win10 before RS1 (version 1607, build 14393), so icebag must run an old version of the OS:

I don't "feel good about it", I just have very little trust in the platform.

Every experience I have had with WX has been negative due to non-stop issues of one form or another, more specifically incompatability, security, driver and crashing issues...

Since I can't believe you can be so unlucky, I must conclude that you are looking specifically for negative experiences, or cherry-picking them.
