FRU P/N repository of thinkpad parts

#1 Post by wujstefan » Tue Jan 21, 2020 4:41 am

Hello,

I have a whole great set of CD/DVD/Bluray drives from thinkpads, but I cant find any information about FRU-to-thinkpad-model compatibility. Is there such site / document that would potentially allow recognition of drives I have in my stock?

Nope!

I've got more than 40 different FRUs, lots of them are hard to determine which kind of UB are they. FRUs be my guide!

thinkpads.org/fru used to work in 2019 but it's down now :(

https://libthinkpad.github.io/fru/ is still up though!

last resource: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup but not as 'readable' sometimes in my experience

Look at the wording on the drive, if it says Ultrabay Slim or Enhanced, then it-s T40-T61 era (and R, X, etc). If it says Serial Ultrabay Slim or Enhanced then its from the T400-500-440-540 (and maybe later) era,

The back end connectors are also dead giveaways.

40 types of unused FRUs. For ~300 total.

It's unfortunately not entirely truth :)

In the T-series era, from T20 through The T--W-440/540 series there were only three physical interfaces and two heights. The Ultrabay 2000 series has a longer rounded end connector that sticks out from the end of the device. It's in T/A/R 20 and 30 series.

The next one is the Ultrabay Slim and Enhanced. These had a connector that was flush with the back and T/R/X60 series had a plastic tip on the end to prevent them from going into the older T/R/X-40and 50 series. People cut this tab off and the drives supposedly work in the x40 and 50 series. These don't say ultrabay slim or enhanced, but it is EASY to tell what you have got, The connector is a One Part affair unlike the later ultrabay serial device. and there are two heights, slim and enhanced with the enhanced being about 2-3mm thicker.

The ultrabay serial slim and serial enhanced also have a flush connector, but if you look it, it is in Two parts. They also have a smaller square shaped tab that sticks out in the middle to prevent them from going in an older series. These are again in two heights with the enhanced being 2-3mm thicker just like the earlier series.

IBM / Lenovo source parts from many subvendors and just changing the optical drive inside from Toshiba to Panasonic to HL, etc, makes a different FRU. Firmware updates will also cause a new FRU. I've seen many DVD Multi ultrabay slim drives with a II or II after the name which tells me that it is a later revision of the first (IBM) DVD multi drives. Even what looks like the same item will have something different inside that will make it a different FRU. there is also the MFR PN same numbering style what closely follows the FRU numbering pattern.

In the end there are only those 3 connectors (3 & 1/2 with the slim T60 devices with the tab on the end) in two heights.

Well, if there's a R61-compatible BD burner in that lot, I'd be interested. ;)

R61 takes the Ultrabay Enhanced taller 12.7mm drives.

There is one, PRICEY BRD that fits it, but I can't find one on ebay. The rest of the x60/61 systems have Ultrabay Slim (9.5mm high) and to my knowledge there was never a PATA BRD in 9.5mm high size.
