Another ebay failure

#1 Post by cadillacmike68 » Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:05 pm

Be cautious with this seller: itiearav0 They advertised an "open box" 500GB HDD. Open Box as per ebay definition is a new item with NO WEAR, but without original packaging, etc.

Who cares about the box that an HDD comes in??? As long as its new, its immaterial.

The one I got has OVER 25 THOUSAND HOURS power on time.
I do not anticipate any issue getting this refunded, either by the seller or by ebay who will then take it out of the seller's hide.

Then there's the one who advertised a new Hitachi Travelstar 500GB 7200RPM but sent a used, actually dead, seagate 5400RPM drive. Ebay refunded that one with a prepaid mailer for me to return the bad drive. They will take that out of the seller's a$$ (pun intended)

Then there's the chinese seller who advertised 160GB ATA/IDE drives but sent me 120GBs. I ordered two 120GBs and two 160GBs and he sent four 120GBs. He refunded the price difference but said he doesn't have any 160GBs to send, but is STILL listing the same 160GB HDD!?!?!

I usually don't have issues with ebay like this. I got come old Canon camera brochures from Isearl today and they were well packed, and in great condition for their 40-43 years age. They were English editions, I can't read Hebrew. I get many parts for my 1967 deille Convertible and old Canon F-1 accessories, etc. and some computer parts, including some nice NOS Hitachi 100GB 7200RPMATA/IDE drives. Even the 120GBs that guy above sent were nice, NOS condition, but two were the wrong capacity.

Is the chicom covid19 making people stooopid as well??

Man that's crazy. Didn't your wife's last HDD fail at 26,000 hours?

Sorry my friend, but sadly common sense isn't common anymore.

Actually it was slightly less than 25,000 hours. And that particular T61 (the 8897 14" SXGA+) was not her travel system. It was mostly Advanced Dock bound. She uses the T61 6463 15" WSXGA+ for her travel system. Yeah, people either are less than intelligent or they think we are such.

It's thanks to this forum that I have many more tools available to evaluate items to ferret out dishonest vendors, or those who just don't have a clue.

The vendor finally responded. I think they will take the drive back without me having to have ebay do it, which would be much worse for them. I told then I'd pay $5-6 for it because of the hours. We'll see...

I have to say that until today I never fell for dodgy sellers. When I buy on ebay or other auction sites I care a lot for the quality of the auction (pictures, description, feedback etc...) When it is a high value offer I want to buy, I always ask a question to the seller and see how quickly he reacts and how he reacts. If no suspicion is raised, I buy  so far it always was a positive outcome but maybe with my way of scanning through offers, I miss many quality items for cheap prices...

stupid example, when i would see hardware components on a bedsheet, I even do not care... things like this :D
ThinkPad X220: i5-2520M CPU 2.5GHz - 8GB RAM 1333 MHz - SSD 860 EVO 250GB - Debian - ME_cleaned
ThinkPad X230: i5-3320M CPU 3.3GHz - 8GB RAM 1600 MHz - SSD 860 EVO 500GB - Debian - ME_cleaned

Well, the "new" HDDs that were either dead, had 25,000 hours or several hundred hours and the AC adapter that was never shipped have all been refunded and the sellers will get blasted by ebay for not being truthful or being stubborn.

On a positive note the seller who sent 120GB HDDs instead of 260GB HDDs found two 160GBs and sent them. These (and the 120GBs) all tested out New, just as promised.

I also bought several Hitachi 500GB and 1TB HDDs and all were either NEW (0 hours) or had one power up an 0 hours - meaning that it was tested before shipping. So that's all great. I'm waiting on a few more Hitachi 500GB HDDs and then I'll have enough to make backups of all my running systems and make W10 transition systems. I read the items and shied away from any "open box" drives.
