Napa platform updates

#1 Post by K. Eng » Tue Jul 12, 2005 4:51 pm

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/12 ... xes_955xm/

A couple main points:
- 955XM chipset is cancelled
+945PM and GM chipset get 4GB max memory instead of 2GB max memory
+945GMS and 940GML chipsets added to the roadmap, will be used in budget notebooks and SFF PCs

Digitimes reported that system board makers are saying to look out for Yonah Pentium M on the desktop around the second half of 2006:
Intel notebook-use Yonah processors, which are scheduled for launch in the first half of next year, are expected to be seen in small-size systems including small-form-factor (SFF) PCs, all-in-one desktops, entertainment-based and Media Center systems in the third quarter of 2006, according to motherboard makers. [DigiTimes]
I'm betting Yonah will show up in Mac Mini :)[/quote]
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

Intel to aim Yonah at SFF PCs - sources

#4 Post by BigWarpGuy » Wed Jul 13, 2005 2:34 pm

"Intel informed notebook and desktop PC manufacturers during a regular roadmap update that the upcoming mobile dual-core processor Yonah will debut not just as a notebook chip: Sources told Tom's Hardware Guide that Intel will aim its mobile processor for the first time at desktop devices such as Small Form Factor PCS (SFF PCs) as well. The desktop and notebook platform will be identical and consist of the Yonah processor and the Calistoga chipset. Yonah is due in the first quarter of 2006. ... "

And it's about freaking time Intel got a Pentium M platform on the desktop. For the past few years, I've wanted to build a system that idles around 20-25 Watts or so for use as a 24/7 "always on" file server.

My Athlon box, even with a modest Radeon 9600 and a single HDD, burns probably 80-90 watts at idle, if the spec sheets on the components are to be believed.

I can't wait... Pentium M on the desktop will be a good thing.

Edit: More confirmation from The Inquirer:

Digitimes and other Asia news sources have been all over this. There seems to be some paranoia on the part of system board manufactures and 3rd party chipset makers over this move.

Haha that was funny.

I assume people know Intel is working on support for Ultra Wide Band based Wireless USB right? I guess I am the only one who is fed up with bluetooth's speed and instability.

The Inquirer says "late Febrary" for the Yonah launch.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=24966
INTEL IS GOING TO LAUNCH Yonah in late February of 2006, or maybe in the early days of March. While the exact day is not set in stone right now, it won't be far off that.
:?

Considering that Yonah taped out last September, that is a very late launch. I wonder if AMD will beat Intel to dual core mobiles.
