Intel T7600G for 30 USD?! Anyone know this vendor...

#1 Post by juliaaa » Thu Mar 11, 2021 4:56 pm

Hey,

does anybody know this vendor, "Shell H"? I just discovered that they're offering T7600G for only 30 $ (+ ca. 25 $ shipping), which is 1/3 of the current prices on eBay etc.

https://www.shellhoaf.com/intel-core-2- ... -57376.htm

I have an old R60 9461-DXG with a T5600 @ 1.83 GHz and I'm thinking about upgrading it. SSD and 4 GB RAM are already in place and a T7400 is on its way, but it seems the T7600G can be easily overclocked to over 3 GHz...

Which leads to my next question: Is the R60 fan/heat sink unit capable of handling an overclocked T7600G? If not, would it be possible to swap it for a more performant unit from a different ThinkPad model?

...ah, and btw: Free shipping from 40 $, so grab something useless for 10 $ and get a T7600G for 40 bucks. Sounds too good?

Cheers,
J

Honestly, I'd be hesitant to throw a T7600G in there. Yes, it can be overclocked...but...these machines are not exactly known to be cool-running to begin with.

You're dealing with a 15-year-old platform and no amount of upgrades will make the overall usage experience smoother. These systems are best served with a T7200, running XP or a *very* light W7 install in the 32-bit guise. Some *nix distros will run fine as well.

That same outfit will sell you 10 (yup, that is TEN) T7400 CPUs for only $44.-

That outfit also stinks like a brand new Chinese knock-off scam eBay-copy outfit, STAY AWAY!

Okay, it seems the article photos come from this Chinese eBay shop:

...which has an impressive track record!! In fact, I can't remember the last time seeing an eBay seller with such an immaculate rating...

Someone might be abusing this shop's good name to rip people off...I've contacted the eBay seller, let's see what he/she has to say!

Actually, this website seems to pull photos off multiple other random eBay seller's listings. It's rather questionable when they don't even put a single effort in making their own photos...
On eBay, I believe the terms actually say this is legal. That's quite ironic because this is not legal on Taobao for most. Every photo has a watermark saying stealing the photo leads to immediate investigation...

I wouldn't trust that daily-focus-24 either!
Nobody is that perfect!
And their feedback is all computer-generated!
Another knock-off shop, yuck!

How does one "computer-generate" thousands of eBay feedbacks?? Also, if the shop was actually ripping off people, wouldn't you expect at least a few negative feedbacks over the past 12 months? They're registered since 2010...

PS.: Okay, they actually do have few negative feedbacks (as to be expected with any seller), just not in the past 12 months

My rule of thumb for evaluating sellers on eBay is to go through each neutral and negative feedback and see what they say, like whether they indicate anything beyond the buyers being stupid.

Me too!

Of course...if I had the will and means to generate massive numbers of "self-buys" + feedback, I would also include a few neutral and negative ones for good measure. :D

Core 2 Duo processors are no longer in demand, they are considered too old by now. I'm not suprised they try to sell 10 T7400 for less than $50.

I am. The Asia market still has a lot of older machines unlike the rest of the western world, and I've been burned by a defective T7600G CPU before. Luckily that outfit was from a Chinese-run apartment shop out in the middle of Tokyo, and I could visit them in person. That's the only reason I got my 5000 yen (about 45 USD) back somewhere in the early part of 2018.

That said, I did buy a regular T7600 CPU from them for 3000 yen, and they even let me install it in their soldering re-flow station. After I successfully installed it and tested it to be alright and shook on the deal (the deal of which included installing it with their screwdrivers and equipment, there, in-person), they then asked me before I left if I would be interested in working for them ...

I decided not to, and I can't find that place anymore, but if anyone is curious to go looking they were somewhere outside of Sugamo station on the Yamanote line. But who knows, a certain vampire maid cafe a friend took me to in Akihabara closed down due to the recession (as did PC Captain, which was my favourite used Thinkpad shop after all the other ones closed in April-June 2018 and Akihabara very suddenly converted from "Electric Town" to "Anime Town")... so maybe that outfit closed too.

Just an old story, don't mind it.

But OP - the first real of caveat emptor is that something too good to be true, is. I would skip that offer.
