stability of eGPUs?

Due to things slowing down a bit I ended up selling my desktop and relying solely on my X1C3 for day to day use. Eventually I plan to replace it with something newer and more powerful, but I was hoping for something that could do VR - which limits me to the Legion line. I'm now looking into an eGPU solution as I can make do without gaming while waiting for GPU prices stabilize, but I was wondering how well the ThinkPads handle them. Reviews seem to indicate that the X1 Extreme or any system with a dGPU is more then a bit glitchy switching between the gpus. Has anyone used an eGPU or is familiar enough with the problem?
