Hi all, I just bought a T42 (model 2373N3U). It comes with a three year warranty (so its says on the quote i received). However, I'm assuming this does not include any further protection due to accidents (falls and etc.). Do you recommend buying addtional protection for the laptop and furthermore, how long do I have before gettng it (the computer is set to ship within 10-15 days).
A bit wordy so recap:
not sure if the 3 year warranty covers accidents such as spills, drops, etc. so should I get additional protection and how long before I can get it? Thank you.
Warranty and Protection
The standard warranty does not cover accidntal damage. Even the protection plan excludes some accidental damage I think, though I have no experience with that.
I have a, all-risks rider on my renters insurance that covers all damage, theft, etc. to both my laptop and camera gear for about $120 a year.

skepticism
I've never had anything go wrong with a desktop or laptop that really needed fixing with a warranty. In addition, I've read so many warranty service horror stories on this forum that I'd rather live with a minor problem than risk encountering more problems by sending my ThinkPad in to be serviced. On the other hand, some people on this forum do report excellent warranty service, and some problems can't be lived with and do require service. I wouldn't buy extra warranty service that covers accidents unless you carry your thinkpad more than usual or for whatever reason put it in especially risky situations (I don't know - like carrying it under your arm while riding a bike everyday to work or some such thing.)
Depends on how much you paid for the thing, and what you do with it.
If you're a student, go for it - you'll undoubtedly screw it up by spilling something in the KB, dropping it, etc., etc.
Otherwise, think about how much it would hurt you if you had to pay for a new TP if you broke it accidentally. If you can afford replacing your TP, and you're REALLY careful with it, don't bother.
