update: problem solved

#1 Post by Adam » Fri Oct 07, 2005 6:56 pm

update: I was wrong. They did ship it but didn't let me know until I called asking about why the money was taken out.

Hey guys. I ordered a X41 tablet yesterday, and today I noticed they already took the full amount from my VISA. It hasn't shipped yet and wont for another couple weeks (if I'm lucky).

The offices are closed now for the weekend so I can't get any info from them. Do any of you know why they would take the money right away? They even say:

IMPORTANT CREDIT CARD INFORMATION Please note that for the purpose of this transaction, your credit card will be charge only upon release for shipment of the product(s) by Lenovo.

I rather them not take the money until they actually ship my laptop. Anyone else have this happen to them? Oh and it's not just a hold. I called VISA and they said the money was actually taken out.

Thanks

Totally normal. It's NOT the time of shipment at which the credit card is charged, its the "date of receipt." (This is also the date at which your trial period starts counting down from)

So its essentially a no interest loan for a couple weeks. It's normal business practice.

Enjoy your new x41t.

Thanks
when i was buying from ibm, the charge was made when the merchandise shipped...
not days or weeks before..

NOW, it might be that the charge is AUTHORIZED but not actually CHARGED to the CC account..
this is more normal..
they need to be sure that you can pay when it is shipped..

it might appear to visa that the $$ is actually gone..
and this is how it should be..
remember that there are massive amounts of credit card fraud..
can't fault lenovo OR visa for being very careful..

it will be interesting to know which happened in your case.. :)

also, FWIW, i have a new, open box, tablet available NOW, not in two weeks.. 18666SU model..
but probably not at the same price as you are paying to lenovo..
(this is NOT to be taken as a solicitation to sell merchandise, just a statement of fact)

If I recall correctly, some states require by law they not charge until the item has shipped. They can however authorize.

There is a difference, even though online systems and billing systems often confuse the two.

Oh by the way, I'm in Canada. And I called VISA and the person said the money was taken out.

A sales agent told me that they dont take money till the item actually ships. And on the order page it says:
Lenovo wrote:IMPORTANT CREDIT CARD INFORMATION

Unless I'm reading into it wrong.. it sounds like they only charge you when they ship the item. It says nothing about "date of receipt".

Anyway... thanks for the replies.

Not sure what law applies in this situation, but in most cases, it's not allowed. Might be the Canadian law part of things.

The typical deal is "FOB Shipping Point"... ownership of the goods passes to the buyer when the public carrier accepts the goods from the seller. Aka when it's "picked up for delivery" (in IBM's case, when it's loaded into the UPS truck sitting at the factory). Until they are on the truck, the goods for accounting purposes are in the inventory of IBM.

The other popular way of doing things is FOB Destination. Difference being, the goods are property of IBM until they are delivered (rather than just placed on the truck). This is typical in cases of COD (Cash on delivery).

WHen I first placed my order with Lenovo/IBM the amount of the laptop was put on hold. After it had shipped the hold was taken off. A few days after receipt of the laptop they put the charge in for the laptop. It is possible that the laptop has already shipped?

Wow... I figured out the "problem". It shipped already and is expected to get to my place today.

I don't understand it though; I hope there's no problems with the shipping info. Last week I called and asked what the estimated time to get one in stock is. The sales rep said they were expecting 6 X41ts on the 10th of October, but there were 10 people waiting for them. And it would be another 2-3 weeks before mine would be in.

So basically mine somehow shipped before the first batch were even expected to come in stock.

Strange... lets hope everythign is ok with the order though.

I assume from your other posts everything worked out and you have your X41T.

Yup, it came without any problems. :) Thanks for asking.

I still don't understand how Lenovo doesn't know what they have in stock.
