Lenovo Thinkpads returning to retail at Office Depot Nov 6th

#1 Post by Inky » Thu Nov 03, 2005 4:42 pm

Hi Guys,
Haven't been here for a while but thought I'd pop in, knowing you all might find this of great interest (finally a place where people can try 'em out!)

Here's a brief quote of the article highlights:

The ThinkPad is gearing up for its return to retail, starting with a partnership announced Thursday between Lenovo and Office Depot.

Consumers will be able to purchase either a ThinkPad Z60t widescreen or a ThinkPad T43 with biometric fingerprint readers starting Nov. 6, China's Lenovo Group said.

I knew this would happen. I just can't figure out if it's a good or bad thing.

Moved to the News forum...

Doing retail is risky because there are inventory and overstock issues that Lenovo will have to deal with. On the other hand, people will finally get to try out ThinkPads in person before buying them.

I for one cannot wait to try out a Z60t :D

If the article is right and "The laptops will retail starting at $699--a 50 percent price drop from their usual $1,399 price tag online" there won't be any "overstock" issues.

I wonder which T model they'll stock.

No doubt it will be a run-of-the-mil XGA version w/ slow drive. Just my guess. They need to keep the cost down to prevent sticker shock.

My guess is that the $699 price tag reflects the price of a low end Z or R series notebook. If you check the Lenovo website, the R series starts at $699, and the Z series starts at $799.

The fact that Office Depot will have $699 models doesn't mean that they won't carry more expensive stuff!

Ditto :)

I was just pushing my gf to get a Z60t for her Dad, but they went the Dell route instead...

Perhaps Lenovo will announce a deal with Wal-Mart next, haha, that'll be strange. Wal-Mart is trying to offer higher tech goodies for Thanksgiving season this year (will carry $88 Razr cellphones, $400 HP laptops, etc).

Exactly. I would still get mine from Bill-The Man-Morrow, but at least now there will be places to see what I'm getting.

Of course, right now I'm too happy with my T42 to get another ThinkPad, but I foresee a UXGA Flexview in my future someday.:-)

In the news since last week:
Thinkpads R50e and future other models at Wal-mart (starting with Germany and Belgium) for EUR 599,-
They are right next to HP and Gateways

That's no joke (you can google for it)

Has anyone seen these greatly discounted thinkpads yet at Office Depot? The news article mentioned Z60t and T43, but the T43 Office Depot is currently listing on their site is actually slightly more expensive than directly from Lenovo.

So where are the walmarts that have these laptops. The one near me (I am in california) carries video cards and wireless junk, maybe a burner or two. No computers though, and no sign of a laptop. I was thinking of picking up one their laptops with Linspire on it. Jus to mess with.

Just two posts up tells you that they are starting in Germany and Belgium. They aren't in the US yet. I wish they were though, as I live less than 2 minutes from a Wal-Mart.

Yeah. I live about 4 minutes away from one as well. Although I try not to do much business with them, a laptop that cheap is hard to pass up.
