Intel has been taking a pounding from rival AMD, particularly in the server arena:

Looks like Intel is going to move the server and desktop platforms to the Core microarchitecture first:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=31150
And end deployment of core in laptops using the Merom core. It looks like Woodcrest (server) in July, Conroe (desktop) in August, and Merom (notebook) in September.
Merom, for those not familiar, is the follow on to Yonah (the current Core Duo T2x00 series). Merom has the same type of cache (but 4MB instead of 2MB) and arbiter bus as Yonah, but has completely different execution cores. Merom also supports x64 (64-bit), which Yonah does not.

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
Wow. 4mb of cache and 64-bit capabilities.
Linux 64-bit here I come!
Think I may wait until the end of the year to buy a laptop then. My T30 works perfectly fine for my needs at the moment.
Thanks for the information.

Intel apparently moved the Core processors launch up yet again. Woodcrest is due in June, Conroe in July, and Merom in August:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=31316
French rumor site x86-secret claims a launch date for Woodcrest of June 26th, 2006:

Intel must be under worse fire than I thought. It seems that Intel is trying to burn off its inventory of Netburst based CPUs.

Here's what I think may be a symptom of the current inventory oversupply:
Dell Link. Note the almost 50% sales price on some models...
