Because I like to learn and use my Brain rather than grey goo that gets returned by Google. :P

As far as I am concerned, it will be a cold, harsh day in the last level of Hell before Doctors and other trusted professionals use something like Google or a Wiki when a patient's life is on the line.

Same goes for Engineers; would you trust somebody who just "passed" and uses Google for coming up with solutions for structures that literally *hold people's life on the line* like a bridge or a pacemaker? No, I think not. In such a case, quality, intelligence, forethought, and persistance are required in hard measure. There is a reason people go to school, study, and get educated rather than being force-fed results when there is an important decision that has to be made. The former is called "learning" and the latter is called "irresponsibility" or, in certain cases, "malpractice."

I like to call it Cult of the Amatuer and I have a particular nightmare about it, which I will relate in another story perhaps.

*seriously hopes that was a sarcastic remark* :D
Gee whiz. It was actually a joke.

Remind me to keep it serious next time

You never cease to amaze me with your knowledge for things that outdate you. This show was on 1689-1971. I'm sure that there were reruns, but I don't think that I ever saw this one, and I am the definition of a couch potato.

. . . that was one long running show, 1689 to 1971 . . .

Actually, the original show was called Wacky Races. The Penelope Pitstop show was a spin-off from this as she was one of the more popular characters in the show. Cartoon Network re-run the show in the mid 90s right after my favorite show - Dexter's Lab.

I particularly liked the dog Muttley with his snigger/laugh

"heeheeheehee" while sounding like he was running short of breath.

Very very weird and very very cool.

Wow, I never knew there was television in 1689! Perhaps there was a time warp? I had thought that the first television set was invented by Lee de Forest in 1906...

Yeah and that show, Perrils of Penelope Pitstop, quoted by Steve as running from 1689 to 1971, is the longest running kids cartoon in the past millenium. :)

Thanks sumgiri for correcting me. Cartoon Network rerunned both shows (,Penelope Pitstop and Wacky Races,) back in the 1990s and nowadays Boomerang shows it from time to time.

Oh yes, I know, as I correctly surmised. As it is a viewpoint too insane to be real; but it doesn't help saying it was a joke *after* the fact now does it?

My ThinkPad is named Yoshitsune, after the Japanese general and folk hero. If I build another desktop, I'll probably name it Benkei, to keep the theme going.

My old desktop was named Cliffjumper, after the first Transformer toy in my collection, and because it had a red mobo and video card. Turned out to be an appropriate name after it tried to commit hardware suicide repeatedly, and finally succeeded by catching fire. I... have bad luck with desktops. Very bad luck. Hooray laptops.

All of my hard drives are named after AIs and characters from Bungie's Marathon (and eventually Halo, after I ran out of Marathon names).
ThinkPad A31p (2653-H4U) "Yoshitsune"

ThinkPad T61 (-) "Shingen"

Blast from the past! That show (Wacky Races) was quite popular in Spain in the 80s. I remember that dog with the asthmatic laugh. He rode with some French guy with an old fashioned moustache who was the villain of the show, and would always set up traps that would backfire on him (causing the dog to laugh at him).

Penelope if I remember correctly was always primming herself up, looking at the mirror. There were also a couple of prehistoric brothers and a bunch of other wacky characters. I really liked that show! :D

Did you buy the enclosures and stick drives in them? if so which enclosures did you get, your favorite?

I'm looking to get one to put my 200gig in but I've seen a lot of reviews where people have lost disks to bad/poorly made enclosures. I think it has to do with the power.

Brugge is a 20GB 1.8" drive that was bought as a unit locally here in NZ (From Dick Smith Electronics). Doesn't need mains power as the drive is only 1.8" and can thus be driven by the bus quite easily. Have had it for nearly two years now.

Antwerp is a 20GB 2.5" drive that I put in an enclosure bought locally (again, at Dick Smith). It generally needs mains power, but I have used it without. In fact, I don't use this drive nearly as much these days.

Knokke and Hasselt are both 3.5" drives (120GB and 180GB respectively), one of which is in a Dick Smith enlosure and the other in a NexStar enclosure. I bought the drives and enclosures separately.

I personally name it by designation, Thinkpad z61m.

Kinna resurrecting an old thread here, but I finally came up with a name.... By-Tor (Or the longer version, "By-Tor: Knight of Darkness"). By-Tor being one of the characters from the Rush songs "The Necromancer", where he defeats the Necromancer, and "By-Tor and the Snow Dog", where he his the evil character, residing in Hades, and is ultimately defeated by the snow dog.

I think that By-Tor is just an awesome name and a subtle little Rush refrence (if someone didn't already notice the big 2112 sticker on the back of my screen)

My Thinkpad is a T42.

So I called it "Fortitudo".

In Latin, fortitudo means both physical strength, vigor and courage.

R52 - ThinkPad
old T21 - T21
Media Center center box - Athlon
previous main box - MainBox
external hard drive - Barracuda
old linux box - Homebuilt

I'm sensing a certain lack of originality in my device names in the context of this thread, but at least I can remember which is which. :)

"Welease Bwyan"!

All my systems get the notation IBMT23-n or IBM600Xn, where n is the order in which I received the laptop. I know, not very imaginative.
