Appears new "Merom" will be "hotter" tha

All Core 2 Duo Merom processors have a TDP of 34W, including the lowly 1.66GHz T5500. In comparison, the 1.66GHz Yonah rings in at 27W.

Interested in knowing what the practical side of this is. I was one who was going to wait for the new CPU, but maybe the Core Duo might be in the "just right" space for battery life and not having a "heater" machine.

Practical impact of this is low. In general the power consumption under average use is more telling, and indications are that Merom is slightly superior in this regard.

The fact that all Merom's have a TDP of 34W probably means that Intel just got a bit lazy and decided to throw out some safe numbers for manufacturers to use.

The 1.66 GHz Yonah's TDP is 27 Watts ONLY for the single core version. The dual core version TDP is 31 Watts.

Typical dissipation under average use is what is important.

The early reviews of Merom are reporting that it has better battery life than Yonah despite the higher TDP. They are speculating this is because Merom's a faster chip, hence it can finish executing stuff faster and stay in sleep mode longer.
