Thinkpad Model number chart?

#1 Post by basscleff » Mon Sep 25, 2006 4:08 pm

I once saw a thinkpad model matrix of reference number chart

In particular, a chart that would decipher the 7 character model number into model types, such as 2628-F2U = T20 and so on.

anyone have anything like this, or a link to it?

thx

I have not seen anything like you have mentioned, but you can search IBM's site at:

http://www.ibm.com/help/us/en/help/

BTW, 2628-F2U is a 750Mhz A21m according to the site.

I believe the best you can hope for is Tabook.pdf. Unfortunately it only lists the models from the last couple of years or so. It is updated several times a year, with new models added, and discontinued models deleted.

See Item #1 in the FAQ: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1689

You can search IBM's site by model number, or you can Google it, and often find the specs.

Discontinued models get added to tawbook.

I have heard of tawbook, but I have never looked for it. I didn't even know if it was available anymore or not. A quick search on IBM's or Lenovo's site would not bring it up for me. FWIW, a search for tabook does work.

tawbook is right here -> ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitute/psref/ along with all the others!

However, now that I look at the whole folder and the index for it, I see that Lenovo stopped updating tawbook in 2005 and started using ltwbook instead for that purpose.

(Note to anyone from Lenovo reading this - don't be messing with the *book names - you screw up our FAQ here and on the mailing list!)

Yes, tawbook and tabook are good off-line references, but they do not appear to have ALL of the different type numbers listed. For example, T23s are normally 2647s. That is all that you see in the tawbook listings. Yet if you look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T2x series, some of the T23 models are listed as type 2648. Going to the IBM/Lenovo site confirms those 2648 models as T23 systems.

Shoulda read the FAQ!
[more carefully]

I always just did a search on IBM's site for tabook when I wanted an updated copy - which works for tabook, but not tawbook.

I keep that link bookmarked. And for quick reference, the R series (R32 and prior) is in the trwbook.pdf and the i series is in tiwbook.pdf

Also for the record, you can look up almost every model thinkpad ever made here.
