The 911 is directly based on the VW beetle.
Yes, yes, no, no, to the above.
Yes, the Beetle was designed by Dr. Porsche for Der Fuhrer (who also thought up the Autobahn).
Yes, the 914 shares some Porsche design philosophies.
No, the 911 and 914 look
nothing alike

. The 914 is
much more angular than the 911. Maybe you're thinking of it's predecessor, the 912, which uses the 911 chassis and the 356 engine? Or the later 912E, which used a VW engine? The 912 line is identical to the 911 externally.
And no, the 911 is not based on the VW Beetle. The 356 was designed off the Beetle platform because post-WWII Germany had manufacturing and supply issues and they needed a lot of already-existing parts in the early 50s. By 1964, Porsche was more successful and such issues in the past. The 911 shares no design with the Beetle, other than the similarity pointed out by my girlfriend at the time - both had the engine in the back. So does the Corvair.
And to swing this back around to laptop design - Porsche Design GmBH has designed laptops (and most other things). The model line was labeled VPR Matrix and sold by Best Buy. Here's a link:
http://www.vprmatrix.com/difference_design.asp. Not a very impressive design, though the Acer Ferrari models are no great shakes either, imo.
