New Fujitsu 250GB and 300GB Laptop HDs!

Today Fujitsu announced a new line of laptop (2.5") hard drives with 250GB and 300GB capacity. No price or date was announced but the new drives are expected to be available in early 2007. Basic specs include:
-- Capacity: 250/300GB
-- Rotational Speed: 4200 RPM
-- Interface: SATA 2.5, ATA-8
-- Native Command Queuing
-- Best in Class Read / Write Power Consumption: 1.6W typ.
-- Idle Power Consumption: 0.5W typ.
-- Track to Track Seek Time: 1.5ms typ.
-- Host Transfer rate: 150MB/s max.
-- Operating Shock: 300G (2ms)

That's amazing! The 200GB drives came out just several months ago, and very soon we can have 300GB!

That's insane. I'll have to rethink my home server setup.

An A31 can take three hard drives at once. That's nearly 1TB in a portable server. This is serious.

Serious indeed. Although I am pretty sure that people will find ways to fill those up.

1TB in a Thinkpad? Methinks I smell a bragging right.

Too bad the rotational speed isn't higher than 4200.

When people start actually requiring 1TB systems as of late, I think that higher capacity takes a higher priority than those looking for spindle speed. Massive portable storage is what is probably the niche they are going for. Generally, the HDD makers tend to shoot for more capacity first, then try to lower the seek times and overall latency.

Hitachi announced 250GB drives on November 1st already, so Fujitsu's press release is not really shocking.

Of far more interest to me is the 7K200 Hitachi.

Let's hope it actually sees the light of day durng the first half of '07.

Although the thought of three of the 300GB offerings in my hangar Queen A30P are making me reconsider my home theater server setup.

It says ATA-8 as one of the supported interfaces. I thought it only went up to ATA-6? Would this work on a T23 or a T42 (as those are the two machines I own

)?

Fujitsu posted a few days ago a new record for thermally assisted PRTM heads for their hard drives (posted in "Inquirer"). The marketing guy however wasn't sure about first availability of a 1TB notebook drive by 2008. Probably 2009/2010.

Just perfect for the Mini mac in the living room.

Remember -
a hard disk has 2 stable states:
1.) New
2.) Full

Status 2 is the most common and is independent of any drive capacity (proven in daily experience)

I have 100GB in my thinkpad, split into 70gb windows (~15gb free) and 25GB Linux (~20GB Free). I also have a 500GB external (~ 5GB Free) and a 250GB External ( ~ 75GB Free).

Point is that I can use the space. I download a lot of movies and music, so they can really chew up space. I was looking forward to picking up one of those 200GB drives, but they are only 4200rpm. Looks here like the 250's and 300's will also only run at 4200 at launch. I suppose I will wait until we see a 200-300 in 5400 and pick one of those up. 4200 is just too slow for me.

Hitachi 7K200 with the hybrid option is what you (and I!) need. Looks like Fujitsu and Hitachi are going after different market segments ...

Well, I guess 4200rpm is only the first shot to get this technology into the market.

With Vista coming in a few weeks, I guess the hybrids will become standard pretty soon. Samsung disclosed that they will produce a hybrid drive with internal motion sensor and internal processor cache, without need of Vista support.
So those drives will be very useful in older notebooks!
