Why do they have to make it so hard?

#1 Post by benplaut » Fri Jan 05, 2007 9:53 am

I don't want the best of both worlds, i want the best of all three!

The thinkpad line has alot of very similar laptops, at similar prices. Maybe you kind folks can make the decision for me, like for my much-loved T40 14" so long ago

The contentors are (All with C2D T7200):
$1614 T60p 14" w/ 512 and 80gb. Is it worth it for the FireGL? I can upgrade the ram for cheaper elsewhere. I game a bit, but how much of a difference would be make (from worse to bad).

$1569 T60 wide SXGA+ w/ 512 and 120gb. How much worse is a X1400 than the FireGL, and how much do the extra pixels matter

$1489 Z61m Adv w/512 and 80gb. It's no T... Does it compare to the T60 wide?

Ultimately, I'd love to find a T60p UXGA within my price range, but that's aiming a bit too low at $1500. I've also been looking at macbook pro--undecided

I'd go with the t60 Wide or the t60p if I were you. The 14" will be faster (due to 7200rpm drive). The 15.4" Wide will have more consistent screen quality.

The FireGL v5250 is a tamed version of the ATI x1700, if that helps your decision. The v5200 is an x1600.

I returned my z61p; it was a beast relative to the T series (and the screen wasn't usable for me.)

The Z61m has the same screen as the t60 Wide, and firewire + SD card. If portability is of no concern, it's a good choice, too. Quality is right there with the T's, excepting screen-back "firmness".

I've read here that the screens on the 14" t60p's are (sometimes) less than spectacular. The 14" T60 Wide and 15.4" T60 are approx. the same height and thickness.

In my opinion, t60's are of higher quality than MacBook Pros.

Hope this helps!

yea, i read the "five thinkpads" earlier, got my choices from there. I'm leaning torwards the P, given that a x1700 runs circles around a x1400. Shouldn't be too hard to OC back to normal 1700 speeds

I hope i won't miss the extra pixels; they can come in handy sometimes!

I got a EPP discount through a friend of a friend, so my decision is pretty much down to a regular T60 14. I don't think the forum rules allow me to say what the discount was (Take a hint from above?), but here are the specs of my baby being ordered soon:

T60 14" w/ blutooth
T7200
1gb ram (1 sodimm)
120gb 5400rpm
X1400
dvdrw
adv mini dock

I can't believe I fit all of that plus a mini dock into a rather tiny budget :D

Z Series with Titanium lid give the same (perhaps better) sturdiness and firmness as the T60.
