Access Connections Quandry

#1 Post by jsteele » Mon Feb 19, 2007 3:40 am

I've been using various versions of AC for some time now, most recently 4.23. I've never had need to modify the default TCPIP settings as received from the DHCP.

However, I now have a need to be able to acquire one or the other of two wireless access points, one (A, 192.168.1.1) of which is also a router directly connected to a DSL WAN. The other access point (B, 192.168.3) is attached to a router (C, 192.168.1.2) which is connected to a second WAN. One Ethernet port on AP/Router (A) is also connected to a port on router (C). The two APs have differnt SSIDs and thus a wireless client can attach to either AP and, depending on the gateway chosen (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2, use either WAN. Router (C) also serves as the DHCP server for the entire network.

The DHCP on router (C) serves addresses to W/L clients on either AP, and of course always gives itself as the gateway (192.168.1.2) in the DHCP response. Because XP does not adequately implement broken gateway handling, to provide user fallback to an alternate WAN and recovery to the associated primary WAN I have batch files using the route and netsh commands to select the gateway and configure the DNS for each WAN. Thus regardless to which AP the client is connected the client can use either WAN as required.

In AC you can also configure overrides for various TCP/IP and DNS settings. In the AC profile for AP (A) I have configured the correct DNS for WAN (A) and in the AC profile for AP (B) the DNS for WAN (B) are configured. In the overside options it also has an entry for the default gateway for the profile. This would IMPLY that you can specify the GW for the profile independent of the DHCP settings. However, despite this option apparently the profile can override the IP addresses and/or the DNS addresses but not the GW.

Problems with Access connections 4.23 and Gateway address

I have been having the same problem for some time. I have been unable to correct it. Sometimes if you keep connecting it will eventually update the gateway. This is a bug, but I cannot make any headway on it.
