It is times like this that Microsoft paints themselves as terminally clueless morons and fools.
1. That is less than a year away, and based the snail's pace by vendors, critical business software still will likely not be available for Vista.
2. SP3 for XP is due out AFTER January, 2008.
Even as recently as 2005, large companies were blowing away XP and loading Windows 2000. My guess is that Microsoft's action here will slow down the sales of Vista, not increase them.
The vendors I need to convert so I can move to Vista in advance of my clients have made roughly zero progress in providing Vista-compliant versions.
Additionally, Outlook 2007 was born brain-dead, so that suite may be a complete non-starter for businesses.

Gee, when I saw Gator's thread title I automatically assumed it would be the END of 2008, because it makes so sense to stop selling XP any sooner that than. But according to the article, it's actually January 2008! That's way too soon and I agree that Microsoft has made a stupid decision.jdhurst wrote:It is times like this that Microsoft paints themselves as terminally clueless morons and fools.

If I remember correctly, Newegg (and by inference Microsoft themselves) was still selling Win2K in 2005, four years after XP was launched, even though XP and 2K were quite similar. The difference between Vista and XP is much larger, so it would be even more important to continue selling XP for a while, but Microsoft is doing the exact opposite.

That's excellent.gator wrote:I read a while back that Windows XP support was extended to 2015.
And that might cause more people to try to get illegal copies of XP after January 2008, so the decision to stop selling XP so early hurts both the consumers and Microsoft themselves. Very stupid indeed.gator wrote:Just that you cannot buy XP after next year ...

Micro$haft is $hafting themselves for a change, that's wonderful!
I did not convert from W2K to XP till the middle of 2005.
If I ever change to Vista, it probably won't be before 2012 or thereabouts.
The way Vista is going, I think I might sooner change to a Linux or Mac flavour.

If I have DOS, Win95, Win98 or WinNT - I cannot work doing the job I do today.
If I have Linux, MAC or Vista - I cannot work doing the job I do today. That is, all of the above operating systems do not support my business critical software.
If I have Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro, I CAN work doing the job I do today.
The choices of OS are narrowing, and the vendors are busy building frills and cool, and NOT helping with real work. In fairness, Vista will probably work in time, but likely not before XP is withdrawn. Windows 2000 has already been withdrawn.

I agree 100%. WinXP after SP2 is a very mature OS, and I did not see any reason to shift to Vista. I did use Vista for a while, and I do not like it (atleast for now) primarily because my computer ran slow after I tweaked it as much I can, whilst doing nothing better than what XP offers right now. I agree that XP wasn't the best when it was released, and I would stick my neck out and say that Vista will be really good after SP1. But unless I am forced ( by, for example, some critical s/w vendors who stop s/w support for XP versions) to shift without a choice, or if they introduce something so amazing in vista/future versions (whatz it called?) that I can't live without it, I will stick to XP (with SP3 soon, hopefully) as long as I can.jdhurst wrote: The choices of OS are narrowing, and the vendors are busy building frills and cool, and NOT helping with real work. Looks like Microsoft is going to shoot itself in the foot (again). As far as Microsoft is concerned, XP is done with and now has begun it support only mode. What M$ should of done is release Windows XP Service Pack 3 along with Vista. SP3 should include a few more features that are in Vista (though not all of them) like IE7 and WMP 11, and a few of the security "enhancements" that made it to Vista, not to mention the 80+ updates since the release of SP2. This way the could remarket XP like they did when SP2 was released along with Vista.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I like XP a lot. Sure it has some quirks, but it is a very stable OS now, and is used in a LOT of corporate and production environments. Ubuntu may be fine for personal use, but for commercial use, I don't think it is the right OS.berlin wrote:xp sucks anyway so who cares.

That is an utterly foolish and totally incorrect statement. I have had XP Pro running on two machines for over four years, and my IBM Desktop has been up that long running 24x7x365 non-stop except for update reboots and when I go on vacation (twice in four years). It never (and I mean **never** crashes). An OS this reliable is as good as anything out there.berlin wrote:xp sucks anyway so who cares.
And (big AND), it is one of only two OS's (Windows 2000 being the other one) that will run *everything* I need without reservation. No Windows 9x system can do this; MAC cannot do this; and Linux cannot do this. That is not to say that MAC and Linux aren't good systems in their own right - they are. Just that Windows XP accomplishes more in many business and working circumstances.
An OS this good CANNOT be as bad as you describe.

IMO Microsoft is killing XP early to force an upgrade to Vista. Nothing more than that, they probably see it as a strategic maneuver.

call me foolish but i love my vista and osx both far superior than xp. vista may be picky, but viruses and spywares won't spread across the system if one account is infected even if you surf as admin.pianowizard wrote:Would you please explain why you think it sucks?berlin wrote:xp sucks anyway so who cares.

I have read, but unfortunately I cannot quote anymore, that the deadline has already been revised to January, 2009. Further, I read that Dell has qcuiesed and continues to provide XP preloads in response to customer demand.
As I have said, I will get to Vista someday, but right now, applications and drivers continue not to be completely ready and people who have been early adopters have had issues (read the forums here, for example). It will just take time.
