I think the black case (with the black part of it, not painted on) lends an air of understated elegance.

Look at the lid fit. It makes for a proper and complete unit when closed. Look at a Dell beside it: It looks like Curly designed the base, Larry designed the lid, and Moe put the paint on it all.

Then the Thinkpad has always just been a quality unit, so having IBM on it never hurt. Lenovo has yet to earn those stripes, so they need to protect quality at all costs.

ThinkPads look nice because their design is clean and functional. There's no superfluous plastic material, and no weird lines or colors (some Acer and Dell models).

Well, for me when I look at notebooks other than Thinkpads, they all look too candy like and fancy to me.

On the other hand, Thinkpads seem simple, solemn and more business machines.

How much time do you guys spend admiring the looks of your Thinkpads? I mean just looking and admiring. I have been doing that to my T60 once or twice a week ever since I got it in January 2007. I used to look at my X-series Thinkpads even more often, especially the X2*'s. It's amazing that a laptop can still be so pleasing to the eye after I've owned about 40 of them!

In contrast, while I love the WUXGA screen of my current Dell Inspiron, I don't think I've spent more than a minute visually admiring the laptop since I got it last November!

While I'm working I can't think of admiring it honestly, but I do as much as I can many times a week, when I get some alone time from my wife.

ThinkPads end up looking odd (because of their uniqueness) next to other laptops, and extra tiny. A Dell with a 14.1" screen looks 1/3 bigger than a TPad with the same size. I love it.

Yes, I bought my Thinkpad because of its appearance

#14 Post by anthean » Tue May 08, 2007 11:18 am

I bought my Thinkpad for two reasons:

1. Its durability (my brother said his T40 was built like a tank)
2. Its elegant, no-nonsense appearance.

Plus, I really have a dislike for silver colored plastic notebooks. Apple's powerbooks set a design standard, and many other notebook manufacturers tried to follow. But rather than mimic Apple's choice of a magnesium or aluminum chassis and good build quality, other manufacturers instead chose to use metallic colored plastic and crappy build quality. I was appalled.

But not IBM. IBM stuck with traditional black. When I learned that the chassis was carbon fibre (CFRP ?) and the display magnesium, well, that sold me.
T41 and T410

speaking of tanks, the military kind of tanks, pre-war army guys would tell me the 770 series was "built like a tank" and this was coming from guys familiar with tanks..

Well, look at the 770! With a chassis like that, I would be surprised if it was not a tank!

Mods: How do I put an **pic** notification in someone else's post? If it was mine, I can add that in the post title ...

Moderator edit: By preference, you should link to the image on an external site by using "url" tags. That allows the reader to decide if they want use their available bandwidth to look at it or not. If you do it that way, you also have no need to add a PIC warning to the thread title

I love the thinkpad's outside too. It's just the going together from simpleness yet completeness with subtile additions (the red on the trackpoint for example). The beautiful plain black is also so much nicer to look at then the crappy grey-plastic-looking stuff from other manufactures (and the worst is when they mingle several materials).

I used to do that, but people never seemed to learn from it.
