If it's any consolation, the specs are on Hitachi's website:

I'm planning to get a 7K100... but newegg has it out of stock right now (quite cheap and reliable, yet fast)
Does it mean that they are planning the launch of 7K200?

Prices have been dropping especially since the beginning of the year. So I would say yes they are coming down in anticipation of the release of the new models.

That will never happen. Too much power and heat to run in a notebook.

This is a 7200RPM, but with a MUCH higher platter density and possibly a bigger cache.

I want a T61p with the 7K200 drive (and a WUXGA screen). Dell has both today. I hope Lenovo does before the end of July.

Ken might be right about buying what you need, however, when I'm trying to get my work done (that is, when I have patients waiting too long to see me) , and I have to wait for applications to open and images to open, any delay adds to my frustration.

Bah! Humbug!

I have 2 100gb drives now, soon I will just need one 200gb drive, which is faster too! And I will be able to put my DVD drive back in the ultrabay!

This is indeed a very welcome announcement.

Problem is, will this give a POST 2010 error in T43s?

Excellent. The only reason I have a Dell Dimension desktop computer is that it can have a 320GB internal HDD. When I have a laptop with a 300GB HDD, I can sell the Dimension!

These drives do NOT hold a candle performance-wise to what the 7K200 is going to deliver. PERIOD.

PLEASE keep in mind that the E version is designed for BLADE SERVERS only. If you look around for the threads on the E7K100, those drives are HIGHLY frowned upon for laptop use (b/c they run slightly hotter, have no power-down features, etc.).

I'm pretty happy with the results that I am getting from using an expresscard wth an ESATA. It seems to be faster than the internal hard drive, it get's sustained throughput of about 55 mBps, but the seek times are much lower than in my laptop HD.

The real bottlenecks is not in througput though, usally it is in seek time that the real issue arises. I really hope that they create SSD that are extremely small in size (and even in capacity if it keeps the price down) I would love to have a 16 GB SSD with a 160 GB 7200 drive as well. It would be vista ready-boost on steroids.

EDIT: I misread the numbers and put in the wrong number. My burst was about 85 MBps, lowest around 55. 55 is a more accurate number.

Hey abu_sme
Which expresscard and ESATA drive or housing are you using? Also, which Thinkpad do you have?
Thanks,

a couple questions,

does everyone think that the hitachi travelstar models are better (reliability, performance, etc) than the seagate 7200 models? (even though seagate has a 5 year warranty compared to just one)

what interface to i need for it to work with my t60: ata6 or ata150 (im kind of lost here)

does acronis trueimage work to copy a drive image of an 80gb drive over to one that is 100gb?

thanks in advance

SATA (ATA150)

Yes, but it might leave you an 80GB partition and 20GB of unused space when it is done. I've had that happen and had to re-size the partition using partion magic, etc.

Well, I was hoping to get lucky and find one of these Hitachi 7K200s in Singapore, but after pouring through every store in Sim Lim Square and Funan Mall, I can't find one on a retail shelf (nor even a mention of one) anywhere.

Darn, I was really hoping to stuff one into my T60p before the end of June. :D

That stinks that the 7K200 is SATA only. I'm still [censored] at IBM for installing a SATA to IDE bridge on the T43's. They should have just made it an SATA connection and been done with it. Oh well, I guess the 7K100 will be the fastest drive you can ever get for the T43's.

I checked many sources for this drive over the past week and every one said the expected availability date is June 22nd.

Well today is June 22nd! I hope for those of you who NEED one that this is true. I just WANT one but have no need for it.

$240 to $250 for the aftermarket drive. It certainly looks like it will be smartest to buy a T61p with a minimal hard drive and immediately upgrade to the aftermarket drive, installing the IBM master boot record and using R&R or recovery CDs to install the hidden partition.

Definitely expensive. Mwave is at list price, and the Mac guys are expected to pay even 20% above list.

Over the next few weeks as stock arrives, I think we should start seeing prices in the low $200s. And maybe low $100s a year from now. :)

A 7K100 is about $125 - so for $245 you're getting double the capacity, double the cache, and 25-33% speed improvement - doesn't seem that expensive in those terms!
