Can we still get XP Pro?

#1 Post by pipspeak » Wed May 23, 2007 7:58 pm

MS has said it will discontinue winXP at the end of this year but all the T-series models available through Lenovo only seems to have the option of Vista now, no XP options at all.

Does this mean Lenovo has discontinued XP before the MS cutoff?

I first heard XP would be discontinued in 2008. Latterly I heard 2009 (reasonable source at the time, but I can't recall where). I tried to configure a T61 today, and XP was still an option.

Microsoft has extended the support. See this. However Lenovo can and would end supplying Windows XP at anytime, so imo better thing would be to get a retail copy with you, that way if you're going to order any model in future, you can get it configured with Vista and enjoy the benefit of both systems.
On April 14, 2009 Windows XP will begin its "Extended Support" period that will last for 5 years until 2014. Windows XP without Service Pack 2 is no longer supported and Microsoft has already withdrawn the support for Windows XP RTM on September 30, 2004 and Windows XP Service Pack 1 and 1a on October 10, 2006.

That's odd... it wasn't for me. Tried just now... T61 with discrete graphics (7662CTO) and the only OS options I get are Vista Ultimate, Premium, Home Premium and Home Basic.

Where did you start your configuration from?

It's still an open option on almost all T60/p execept T61 as of this point.

T61 with Win XP

#6 Post by jake1949 » Thu May 24, 2007 10:12 pm

If you want a T61 with integrated video, Lenovo still offers it with XP. I'm assuming that you're looking to order the T61 with a discrete video card which only comes with Vista.

Yup... I guess I'll call them and see if it's still possible to get XP.

Perhaps you have a friend with a corporate XP CD?
Otherwise you can get an OEM XP Pro/SP2 for $102.-
