Which Thinkpad is this? *Images attached!*

#1 Post by frankiepankie » Sat Jun 16, 2007 9:43 am

Hello, i was looking on some secondhand websites for nice laptops and i found this:

Link to website:
http://computer-hardware.marktplaats.nl ... aptop.html

Specs:
P4 2.0Ghz @ 1.2Ghz
HDD: 40GB
RAM: 512MB
DVD/CD-RW

I think that it is a Thinkpad R51 unit. Compared to this picture:
http://www.fabiankeil.de/bilder/produkt ... 00x500.jpg
It looks mainly the same.

It is a T30.
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Rules of the road :thumbs-UP:

It's T30 imo too.

hmmz weird guess from my side then :P

My dad has a T30, but the space between the screen underside and the keyboard is much more less.

If i see this picture of a T30, i am sure that the laptop i looked at, at the second hand site it is not a T30. But there maybe be different versions of the T30.

Also, the left and right keyboard side is not sloping on a T30.
And the T30 has an extra LED panel with HD indicator etc between the Power button and the volume buttons.

The pictures are saying that it is a R51 machine, but in my opinion there doesn't exist an R51 with an P-4M. Only P-M 1,5 or so.

And the T30 doesn't have such a large "Enter" button. The R51 has...

Weird situation this. I think i go mail the seller and ask for more information.

Sorry for my weird word choice, but i am still 15 years old
, and not very good in describing difficults parts of something :P

The key part to notice here is the angled back-left corner of the laptop. The laptops that had this were the *30 series and the R40.

The R32, the R40, and the A31 come with a 2.0 GHz Pentium 4-M.

edit: however, the A31 and the R32 do not have a touchpad.

That would leave us with an R40. Also, like in the picture provided, the R40 has all of its indicator lights are under the LCD and none next to the power button.

The size of the Enter key can depend on the keyboard layout.

Something concerns me a little bit is the resolution of the screen. It looks like it's at least SXGA+, even UXGA. If it's a UXGA one, then it would not be a T30 since there is no UXGA panel for the 14" form factor. So... I guess it's a SXGA+, and only T30 comes with a SXGA+ LCD (from IBM). Certainly the user can swap the LCD by him/herself, but... if nothing is changed after purchasing this Thinkpad, then it should be a T30.

It's a T30. It has that "missing" corner on the bottom left of the LCD.

LOL everyone says different things.

The R40 also has an "missing" corner on the LCD.

But yeah, i think it is actually an T30. Most people say T30, and there are some really professional Think-padders here, so i think it is true what they say.

As does my X31, maybe it's an X31 then?

I know, I was exercising sarcasm.

It cannot be a T30 because a) as you noted, the T30 keyboard takes up the full width of the laptop, which is definitely not the case with the picture you posted, and b) the T30 power light is next to the power button, which is definitely not the case with the picture you posted. (Since the laptop is on, you'd have to see that indicator light if it was a T30.)

Personally I think it's an R40 for the reasons I put in my previous post.

edit, for Hernandez's message below this: T30 had the touchpad available on "select models".

FYI, select models of T30 do come with a touchpad.

To the OP, to end this guessing game, I suggest you ask the seller about the abc of that thinkpad.

Some 15" R40s were SXGA+, and based on the LEDs alone it has to be an R40...

I am continually amazed at the wide range of knowledge here.
This is why, in my humble opinion, this forum is the best.

Thanks
