X40 with 7.2K HardDisk
X40 with 7.2K HardDisk
I am wondering whether I can install a new OS and all other softerwares using the 7.2K Hard Disk in the Ultrabase and keep the computer run far more faster?
But when I go out, I can continue to use the build-in 1.8 Hard Drive.
Is this possible, Any Ideas?

X40 P1.5G, 1GB, 40GB 1.8 HDD + 100GB 7200 rpm HDD in the Dock, DVD Burner. (Looking forward to changing the 1.8 HDD to a SSD when price is acceptable)
Actually I do not know. Because I just purchased an Ultrabase on ebay and will receive it several days later. That is why I ask people who knew or who tried before.sugo wrote:Is the ultrabase HDD showing up as removable drive in Windows?
Does anybody knows whether the HDD in Ultrabase shows as removable drive? Could we install OS on it?
Many thanks !

hi there,
you mean you put an 7200 rpm drive into the bay and it did work? what drive exactly? i tried to do the same, but i always suspected the 7200rmp drive i had had some pb, and i was reluctant in buying another one.
what hdd model are you using?
and of course you can have an operation system running in the ultrabay, now for ex i have osx on hdd0 and xp on hd1(ultrabay)
please let me know about the hdd model! the 5400rpm drive i#m using now makes windows go wayyy much faster than the traditional 4200...

Please do not be confused. What I am sure is that we can install a second OS from Ultra base.
However, I am really not sure whether the 7200 rpm HDD works in the X4 Ultra base.
Why the 5400 rpm one works but the 7200 rpm HDD does not? What is the difference between them? I thought the difference should only be the speed.
Dorin, Have you tried whether the 7200 HDD works by using it in a HDD USB Case Inclosure?

It seems that we can actually use a 7200 rpm HDD in our X40 Ultrabase.

Probably your HDD is SATA HDD and the 2nd HDD adapter only accept PATA HDD. I got this information from a seller of X40 2nd HDD adapter on ebay.

sorry for not replying till now, i kinda lost this thread.
nope, the hdd adapter is for pata, this confirms that the hdd i had is a bad one!
so how does it run on 7200? is quite a big difference between xp when i boot it from 4200 or 5400, so i will start looking for a 7200hdd...
thanks!

I just ordered a Hitachi 100G 7200rpm IDE HDD and a 2nd hard drive adapter on ebay. So I have not yet tested the speed difference. However, I believe that the difference should be huge when booting up Window XP and running big programs.dorin wrote:sorry for not replying till now, i kinda lost this thread.

For my current disk, I need around 3 minutes to finish the entire boot including windows xp, norton, MS office, etc. So it is too slow.
I only have a 40GB 1.8 HDD in my X40 and only 20GB free space after installing all the softwares. This is another reason for me to purchase a 100GB 7200 rpm one.
But I still do not know how to copy the entire system (including the hidden part from Lenovo) on my 1.8 HDD to the new one, since I need to run Windows on that one when working at home.

How did you install the new OS on HDD1 (UltraBase) since we do not have optical drive on X40. Do you use usb 2.0 drive or do you have some method to transfer the OS on the 1.8 one to the new HDD1? Please share your experiend.dorin wrote:hi there,

hutty2000, i did it using acronis. first time it was pretty easy i just had to change the boot.ini ( change rdisk0 to rdisk1), if it doesnt work (it worked first time for me, but later, i think an windows update or so, it didnt anymore) so i had to reinstall the whole windows...using windows fresh install guidelines from this site
so first try acronis, then boot normally into hdd0 (x40's hdd) change the boot.ini from hdd1 and cross your fingers...if not the painfull long process of reinstalling windows and reconfigure it....
if you still have the hiden partition from ibm you;re all set!
any questions fire away!

No, it showed like the primary disk (It connects directly to the mother board).sugo wrote:Is the ultrabase HDD showing up as removable drive in Windows?

Performance of the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD on X40
Hi, I just tested the performance of the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD compared with the HDD in my X40.
1. From pressing the power to hear the windows booting music, it took 78 seconds for the 1.8 HDD and took 58 seconds for the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD in the X4 dock.
2. From pressing the power to fully loaded every software (I have a lot of software fully installed), it took 5 minutes 15 seconds for the 1.8 HDD and took 2 minutes 40 seconds for the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD in the X4 dock.
So the performance difference is huge.
I think the reason why the time difference was small before hearing the windows sound is that the speed of CPU could be a bottle neck, so the Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm HDD did not run at full speed.
