Should I extend my warranty or not?

#1 Post by gator » Thu Aug 16, 2007 11:32 pm

Okay, my T60's warranty is going to expire in 10 days. I am not able to decide whether I should extend the warranty for another year or not. I have had zero performance issues with this laptop, its been spectacular till date. I had some minor cosmetic issues (replaced palmrest, keyboard bezel) and I probably was too picky about those - the original ones were not faulty, just not to my satisfaction.

Should I cough up ~80-$100 and extend the warranty of another year, or should I keep the money in my (underfed) bank account and pray that nothing goes wrong? Please help me decide!

Although thinkpads are famous for their consistent longevity, however no one can foretell what future holds even for best engineered machines, the rate of malfunction is less for sure but these things do happen even with extreme care.

You would be short of some bucks for sure nevertheless warranty is peace of mind and IMHO you should definitely extend it.

I was thinking about this the other day. I still have 2 1/2 years on my warranty/protection plan, but I was wondering if I'd renew it or even get this much next time. I like to tinker with stuff, and sometimes it would be nice to work on something without worrying about voiding the warranty. Such as making some modifications on the T60p heatsink/fan, or even something as simple as changing the thermal grease. With as easy as the Thinkpads are to work on, it seems like it would take a major failure, like a planar board or screen, to make it worth the cost and potential downtime if you had to send it back in multiple times (though the lack of availability of Flexviews probably makes this even more valuable). If I was doing it again, I would probably do either a shorter period, like 1-2 years w/ protection plan, or longer w/ onsite instead of depot. Then, either I'd know I could just fix it myself or get a new one, or have the advantage of the warranty/protection, without the potential drama of shipping it off.

It's probably only $50-60 more to add a post warranty warranty. I'd wait till something went wrong.

Sri, didn't you replace the original SXGA+ screen with Flexview UXGA? I think by doing that you've voided most of the warranty already. It will still cover the HDD, keyboard and optical drive, but these you can replace yourself easily and cheaply. So, don't extend.

Not name calling but it was from some show :) Clint Eastwood i think :)

I wouldn't even ask that question, mine will run out later this year (had 3yrs) and even after no problems at all i'd like to run it for at least another year since this system has been great to me.

I am not sure. I just worry that when they see that the top has been tampered with, they refuse to service the rest of the machine.

OK, here's how to figure the premium. It's only 1% of the current value of the laptop (plus an additional 99% administration fee). If ANYTHING goes wrong with your laptop (within the first 3-days) just send it to me (at your expense) and (I will keep the laptop and) I will refund the amount of your premium too. No questions asked! After the first 3-days I get to keep the premium and the laptop. No exceptions!

I can't produce the documentation, but I am sure that I have read that extended warranties on electronic equipment are one of the biggest scams there are. There is another thread on the board about warranty replacement of parts that are functional but have cosmetic damage. I personally feel that warranty's should only cover non-functional parts.

Scott

(edit) sorry lost track This is the thread

EXTEND PLEASE!

Basically, for me, my computer began to have HUGE problems a few weeks after my warranty was over.

Please extend warranty. It's not worth the risks. (I'm not some Lenovo advertiser or employee)

Hm, maybe Lenovo has a special button at HQ to press when you don't renew your warranty. Very diabolical of them.

But seriously, it comes down to whether you can take care of it as well as you did up to this date. Of course accidents happen, but have any happened yet? The warranty at first is because it's a pricey piece of equipment and you don't want take risks so soon. Time's passed, do you still think you need a warranty? Those years with the warranty, would have mattered if you didn't have it?

Sir, Warranty and Thinkpad protection are two different services, the former does not deal with any accidental issues; latter does and neither of these services give you much room to take risks with/on your machine which can and usually falls in intentional misuse category.

Even though Thinkpads are born warriors, meant to last for years to come; nevertheless no one can predict the life span of a machine for certain, malfunctioning of a small electric circuit on board can force you to farewell your beloved machine fo good.

Sri, go for it. It's been several years since I bought a new laptop (iBook G3, 2002) but I picked up AppleCare for it anyway just for the peace of mind. I'm sure that the T60 will last longer than that cursed dual USB iBook did, but I would definitely play it safe with the new hardware.

Er, if he had bough the laptop with a CC, he may automatically have another year of warranty.
Provided he can dig up the invoice, cc statement etc.
