Currently using my T42 for most things, but not willing to take into the car workshop environment, can any of you guys recommend a TP that will cope with those rigours and run a EOBD diagnostic routine easily?

I think you should consider a ThinkPad 600X or 600E. They are quite durable little notebooks with a 13.3" XGA display. The 600X is PIII, and the 600E PII. They do have 9-pin serial ports, if that is important to you.

I have a client with T30's (with serial ports) that work in trucks for programming dispatch radios. The T30's are in their 5th year and have not presented undue problems. ... JDH

I used both a 570 and a X24 with the bases to tune my old Haltech EMS system. Worked so nice because I could leave the serial connected, and then just pull out my thinkpad whenever I was done. As for OBD systems, I think anything with a few hundred mhz will do fine.

After much research, I now have a 500mhz 600x on its way.
I am sure it will be up to the job.. cheers
