Slot Load Ultrabay 2000 DVD/RW Drives

#1 Post by Harryc » Sat Nov 03, 2007 3:58 pm

Has anyone tried one of these? The thing that's confusing me is that the auction says it is compatible with a T21 for example. I have a T21, the faceplate on my UB2000 CDRW is not even close to that drive.

I see one problem: where's the notch on the right-hand side of the the faceplate? Also, the eBay seller is in Finland but ships from Taiwan???

edit:  That's what I get for clicking on the link before reading Harry's complete post. Yes, the faceplate will not fit inside the Ultrabay 2000 without being altered.

edit2: If the drive does ship with the faceplate pictured and you are concerned about not having an unaltered one in case you sell the drive later, you can buy an extra faceplate and modify it to fit inside the Ultrabay 2000:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0173755727 ($10 faceplate)

Picture #4 appears to be for the UJ-845. Or if you want to try a cheaper route:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0169357873 (bare UJ845 - not 846 $63 shipped to US)

Transfer the Ultrabay 2000 caddy from your existing drive and buy the faceplate and you have about the same thing for $73.

Thanks Ray. Yeah I noticed the un-notched faceplate too. Good idea on the bare UJ-845.

I emailed the seller, here's his response

"Need to cut the faceplate with a sharp knife"

LOL! Even though I have a saw blade for my X-ACTO™ handle, I much rather prefer to use my Dremel©. Having done a few already, it's pretty easy if you have the optional drill stand:
