New lenovo ThinkStation Brand launched

#1 Post by ryengineer » Tue Nov 06, 2007 5:27 pm

NEW YORK – November 6, 2007 – Lenovo today showcased its powerful new entry into the workstation PC market with the launch of the ThinkStation brand. Unveiled in cooperation with the NBA at the NBA Store, ThinkStation marks more than ten years since a major PC vendor has entered the workstation market.

As the first new Think brand introduced in five years, the ThinkStation S10 and D10 workstations are designed to offer Lenovo's highest performance and reliability for professionals in the most demanding data and graphics-intensive environments, such as computer-aided design/engineering, digital content creation, oil and gas exploration and electronic design automation.

The workstations are based on the upcoming Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5400 series and Intel® Core™2 Extreme processors, the first processors based on new 45-nanometer technology that nearly doubles the density of transistors on the chips for new levels of energy-efficient performance.

Two organizations highly dependent upon using the latest technologies, the AT&T Williams Formula One team and the NBA, are evaluating the workstations for possible integration into their operations.............

Pricing and Availability

The ThinkStation workstations will be available starting in January through Business Partners and www.lenovo.com. The ThinkStation S10 workstation will start at approximately $1,199, and the ThinkStation D10 workstation will start at approximately $1,739.
More news can be found here.

Lenovo ThinkStations (lenovo manufactures) are different than IBM's (IBM manufactures) WorkStations (IntelliStation etc.), they'll be each other's competitor for this line of product soon. So, IBM WorkStations and Lenovo ThinkStations should not to be confused, two different manufacturers, same goal of providing quality products.

IBM is a giant in Servers and WorkStations business, lenovo is just starting up and will be only offering two models of these stations initially. Visually speaking if you remove lenovo logo from them, they'll become IBM WorkStations, very identical design. Lenovo's prices are more economical though.

I'm not quite sure - the prices for the Intel & AMD -based IntelliStations seem to be too high & I've never seen any of them in actual use in real life

& then I'm not quite sure about the benefits of the IBM's PowerPC IntelliStations.

And then they offer the Linux based OS's.

Lenovo uses the conventional Vista, Intel & AMD, etc. Right?

With these things in mind, what would be the difference & which would be better? Thanks.

I wonder how much the $1,199 ThinkStation S10 will cost in the UK. Hopefully Lenovo won't just convert that $ sign into a £ sign, and ignore the $2.10 to a £1 exchange rate...

IBM PowerPC IntelliStation is a high-end WorkStation used in airport terminals, hospitals, banks etc. that uses high end sophisticated components i.e. a cpu like IBM Power (100% IBM made), Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron, Sun's cpu, MIPS etc etc.

The ones which would be released by lenovo are on "IntelliStation Pro" level that is a mid-range workstation manufactured using components similar to desktop PCs but a few levels up which provides a combination of top performance along with the option of expandability at great lengths.

Lenovo's manufacturing these workstations gives a little indication of IBM moving on to focus on it's main business of consulting, manufacturing microprocessors, making compliers for gaming companies, developing softwares, serving business needs and what not. There could perhaps be another transition of lenovo taking over IBM's servers and workstations business in few years.
