Are there other uses for mini pci express cards?

#1 Post by brainpicker » Tue Dec 11, 2007 4:27 pm

All the mini pci express cards I see on the market are for 802.11x, wwan, and though rare... bluetooth. Gator mentioned there are flash storage models in the works which will only be available to OEM's during 2008, but what about other uses? This would be the perfect place to add a high quality sound card or hd-tuner card or gps or ??? to a laptop without using the pcmcia/cardbus/express card slot. If anyone knows of a company making such a card for laptops please let me know. I'm particularly interested in a sound card.

Thanks,
- Yak

I'm wondering how a sound card would be usable buried in such a slot, far away from the speakers/ports.

The rest have antenna issues, which admittedly isn't as big of a deal.

Yeah for most laptops that would be an issue. I suppose I wasn't thinking since the laptop in question has the slot is positioned such that I could, with little effort, use the ports on the laptop. Stupid of me to assume they all would be so easy. The speakers I don't care about since I'm not interested in purchasing a $100 sound card to listen through them. You are right in that it's unlikely a company would offer such a piece blind of general laptop design.
