Which ThinkPad best for DVD and Wi-Fi?

#1 Post by BigMacSangwich » Mon Dec 31, 2007 8:04 pm

Does anyone know which laptop would be best for just watching DVD's and using wireless internet? Processor speed doesn't have to be super fast but I would like decent battery life (~1.5-2hrs) and at about a 14" screen. Also it needs to run Windows XP without being super-sluggish. It will be for my dad who just checks stocks and watches DVD's.

I have tried searching for older thinkpads on ebay but none of them come with wireless and dvd-rom together. I don't want to have to buy those separately. I don't want to spend more than $300 as a shipped price.

Can anyone give me some suggestions on what to buy that would fit my needs? Thanks!

By "built-in" WiFi I assume you mean that you don't want to deal with a PCMCIA or USB wireless adapter? If so, then a T23 would work. Some models came with antennas in the lid and a MiniPCI wireless card. This leaves both PCMCIA slots free. Also, a T30 or T40 would probably meet your hardware requirements (14" LCD and WinXP) and price range as well.

If you only need it for watching DVDs, a Z60t/Z60m with Pentium M would be good enough. With the same price, you might find one with better screen resolution and maybe better graphics than the Z61.

Btw, I see you live in Europe so you might want to know some US based TPs will have problems reading zone 2 DVDs. You can only change the zone for limited times (five times I think) So if you buy it from eBay, make sure there are some changes left.

The DVD region-change should not be any problem at all.
This free little utility, DVD-Genie has been araound for years and lets you change regions to your hearts content:

There are also websites dedicated to change the hardware of region-limited DVD players, such as
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/region.html

Google for 'region-free dvd' and/or 'region-free pc dvd' and then search for your brand player.
