Lenovo vs. IBM (poll)
Lenovo vs. IBM (poll)
After taking a look into the related discussion here I thought it might be interesting to run a small poll on that issue and see what people think about it and, of course, to quantify those opinions
So feel free and give your vote!

the newest machines definitely are lacking something compared to the genuine product. I've got a couple of each, there are clearly differences.
I'm not sure one can get terribly upset or worry about it - - not much you can do about it apart from shopping for another brand. These things, electronics in general, have become commoditized...kinda like toilet paper
They've got to grow "cheaper" as they age and the market matures. Gosh, I can still recall my first IBM laptop. IIRC, it was called a 755. That sucker was over $4,500 when new.

I have been using thinkpads for a long time and recently got a Lenovo T60, and it is not the same feeling as the original thinkpads. Personally it feels like a cheaply made generic laptop, may sound harsh but its an opinion

well i had a T2x series and some T4x and i'd say the T60 i have now is better than the T4x because it's a lil more rigid. The plastics all feel the same to me but there is lots of flex in the T4x (probably cuz they were 1" thick)
couldn't this poll have been added to the old thread?

I guess it´s now too late.

I do think Lenovo had a different approach in mind, and perhaps this more fits the attitude of the general purchaser. Whether they've met the criteria for producing reliable work machines should be evident to long term users. I'm still staying with the T42, and no doubt in a few years will see which of the T6x series proves the most reliable.

Lenovo's quality vary by model as IBM's did. Overall though, excellent.

Comparing my Z60m to my T42 and other TPs I've owned, the Z hasn't got the same quality keyboard feel and look as the others, but I'm impressed with almost everything else. I'd say that the overall effort to provide good quality standards is still there, but as underclocker said, the quality will vary from model to model.

I don't know if I can call the Alps keyboard on my T60p "worse" than the NMB keyboard on my T43. They are just different keyboards. I personally prefer the NMB keyboard because it's where I started. That's probably the reason I prefer the NMB on the T43 to the one on the A31p, which seems to be sturdier but I have to make more efforts to type on somehow.
Apart from the keyboard, and the look (another personal preference), I'm very happy with the Lenovo T60p.

I think that tendency could already be observed before the sale. IBM seemed to be more innovative in the old days. (Transnote, PowerPC TPs, various Ultrabay Plus devices etc..). Maybe that's because in an oligopolistic market you are freer to do what you want, but in order to survive in a competition market you'll have to pay attention to what most of people want. IBM would've done the same things (lowering manufacture costs, discontinuing Flexview LCDs, introducing Widescreen TPs etc..) if it's still the owner of Think products and on which it wants to make a profit.I do think Lenovo had a different approach in mind, and perhaps this more fits the attitude of the general purchaser.
