So this thinkpad suffered from the well known exploding battery incidents that have been plauging around the area and it still works sans LCD. Impressive. but it also ate his bed.

Exactly,

- The battery is intact
- LCD doesn't look cracked, or else the moire pattern would not be as uniform
- What is the box of matches doing on the bed?
- Fire harm on the mattress is much larger which does not make sense.
- Why does one sleep with his/her laptop by his feet?
- Why do you happen to have 10L of water in a bottle nearby?

On a side note, I linked to the Gateway Battery Recall from that page because I happened to have an old Gateway laptop battery lying around:
Q: How long will it take for me to receive the battery pack replacement?
A: Requests for battery exchanges will be processed within 48 hours. The battery replacement should be delivered within 4 to 6 weeks.
Now thats what I call service!
