LCD defects?

#1 Post by cj3209 » Fri Dec 03, 2004 3:26 pm

Can someone enlighten me on this topic?

A few years back, I had a DELL notebook that had a couple of dead pixels in the corner of the LCD. I didn't think it was a problem as I never saw it unless I was really looking for it.

Now, recently, I constantly read about people returning their notebooks b/c the LCD has one dead pixel or was 'washed out,' or 'wasn't bright enough,' or 'not clear enough.' People post they have the perfect notebook with zero dead pixels after using software to find them for goodness sake.

Are we all getting a little too paranoid about our LCD screens? Or are we forcing manufacturers to increase their quality control which might be a good thing?

If you read the news, big blue is getting out of the notebook business b/c it's not profitable enough. Did we contribute to this with all our returns?

Shoot, I just realized I posted this on the wrong forum.
Muv me please!

TGFT *

Finally, someone who thinks along similar lines to my humble self...

I bought my laptop from Bill (without the "cherry picking" option) and it arrived with no defects, so I'm not in the best position to be truly objective...this said, I own all sorts of other hardware, purchased new (or at least, as new) with defects.

Two comments here - the first is that I feel we ARE having to accept lower standards as the manufacturers are spending less time/energy/money on QC. The second is more of a question (not that I really wish to rehash this old potatoe) in that I have to ask myself if we're not also becoming more picky - this possibly due to the 'overall' good quality of the stuff we buy.

I won't drop names, but my second 'Swedish box camera' didn't work, straight out of the box! Thank G.. I was in the dealership at the time and it simply involved a swap. My Swiss watch designed to plunge to 600m is the worst for keeping time, despite having been back to the manufacturer more than once. Last but not least, the regular 'readers' will know the stories around my new VW...

Debate open - as to IBM 'selling out' I rather feel that this is possibly a warning shot, and should be taken as such...don't start a general panic...in terms of maintenance etc. I'm confident this would be hard-coded into any restructuring plan...

* Thank Gawd For That

My first TP had a stuck pixel that wasn't in the center of the screen, and I was just fine with it. Then the whole computer died, and tech support couldn't do anything.

Then comes TP #2. That one had a bright red stuck pixel, right in the center of the screen. I was bummed, but ready to accept it. Then IBM really impressed me, and offered to swap with me with no problems, and I wouldn't have to be without my TP at all. The new one is perfect.

I'm not picky really, and was willing to accept some imperfections, but [censored], a bright red dot in the center of what you are doing can be quite a drag.

Now, with my new one, not having that dot there, has made a huge difference.

I think we are being picky, and I think to a point, we are allowed to. I think we should be reasonable, about washing out, and other stuff, but some things just suck.

So, after spending every penny I had on this computer, I am very happy with it and feel very happy about the money I spent.

I am fine if my battery is loose, or if things aren't perfectly put together. A little flex here and there is no big deal to me, and I don't think it should be a big deal to others. But the screen is what you stare at all day long. If Dell can make screens without dead pixels, then IBM should be able to have them all the time right? I bought IBM for a reason, and I expect a higher degree of quality.

So yes, I think in many cases, people are being unfairly picky, but in other cases, when there is a bright red dot in the center of the screen, I think they are justified in wanting another one.

I tend to agree with you Plinkerton (sorry, have no other name...) and the idea of an imperfection as obvious as a stuck pixel is not great - however, just reading these forum does bring in to question just what we conceive as 'faulty' - for gawds sake there are people changing keyboards simply because they're made in China - simply because someone somewhere say's they're better? Let's try to be objective here...
I bought my machine with my money and I want it to be great, but more important to me, I want it to do what it was made for - no more, no less.
