Abused thinkpad
1.
2.
For testing purposes I assume that the testers opened fire on it, not sure but check lenovo blogs regularly to see if someone writes a blog entry on it. (You won't find the pictures there)
The point of this post is; after the damage X41 tablet accepted, it's still not totally in a completely broken shape.

Re: Abused thinkpad
What is your definition of "completely broken"? Does the tablet still boot? Did the hard drive survive?ryengineer wrote:The point of this post is; after the damage X41 tablet accepted, it's still not totally in a completely broken shape.
X220/IPS, T60p/IPS

Re: Abused thinkpad
By completely broken I meant it didn't fall apart into many pieces after been fired on, at least 7 times.qviri wrote:What is your definition of "completely broken"? Does the tablet still boot? Did the hard drive survive?
I heard one commenter say "My X41 tablet is bullet proof!"
I will inquire and let you know if it booted or if the HDD survived or not.

I stitched both images together into this:
http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/x41_t ... actice.jpg
I'm having problems lining up all of the holes, assuming either the lid was closed or rotated into tablet mode. I'm left with the impression that the lid was open and not close to the base. Also, with the size of the holes in the palmrest (9mm or .45?) and especially the smoothness of the holes (almost perfectly round, like it was drilled from the back side), why aren't any of the holes in the LCD and lid completely punctured? Magnesium casing doing the job slowing down the bullets? Or maybe it was the battery? Although if the entry wounds are on the bottom, the three holes through the bottom of the palmrest would have had to go through the battery first. If the HD wasn't directly hit, then there's probably a good chance that it would boot. Just not in that system....

Thanks for putting the pictures together Ray.
I think the battery was installed during the entire experiment and few rounds were fired in the normal laptop mode then the lid was rotated to fire some additional.
I agree with Ray, it’s a mystery why some bullets didn’t totally penetrate through the screen? Presumably the installed battery, thick films of tablet's screen (after seeing what a bullet can do, live in training bases; this seems unlikely though) or the lid that wasn’t put close enough to the base protected the display.
The blue rectangle in the following picture represents where HDD compartment is located on X41 tablet so assuming from that I think the mini drive would've survived but since the bullets drilled through the system board so clearly the machine is left with nothing short of a crippled board:

I haven't heard anything from the person responsible for doing this crazy experiment but I would post again when I've an update.
