I believe that all A,R, T,X,Z and I series which it was first introduced, have it. It is known that none of the tablet versions have one.

Are there any thinkpads made with a 12 inch screen and a keyboard light?
I am looking for something cheap that can handle at least a gig of ram, has a keyboard light. Must have a PC card slot or express card slot for the EVDO card. A nine cell battery would be cool as well.
Are there any older Tpads that fit this bill?

And let's not forget R series, with R40 and all the subsequent models...
If you're looking for a 12" machine, your best bet is X30 that will handle a gig of RAM but can be found dirt cheap nowadays.

I didn't realize that there was this many to choose from.
Which ones have this?
At least a gig of ram.
keyboard light.
12 inch screen. I guess 13 inch would work
Must have PC card or express card slot
A nine cell battery or ultrabay would be cool as well.

If you can explain why you need a gig of RAM for something that you'll be carrying around on a bike...
Get a X22/23/24, these will only take 640Mb of RAM, but are fast enough in XP, well built (much better than X3x IMHO), can be found with internal wireless and/or BT and won't run you more than $200-225...
Just my $0.02...

Those X series look like the solution for me, good advice.
However, the X series doesnt have a Mouse pad. So it won't work for me.
Any other sugesstions?

The X300 doesn't qualify as a "used, beater machine." At least not until I hit Lotto. Which I am sure I am going to any week now.Padhead wrote:I am thinking of buying smaller, used, beater machine to keep in my motorcycle.

You would need to compromise on your requirements then.Padhead wrote:The X300 doesn't qualify as a "used, beater machine." At least not until I hit Lotto. Which I am sure I am going to any week now.
After I-series, IBM started to include Thinklight on all series except the tablets and G-series.
Many R-series thinkpads also come with UltraNav and Thinklight.

No there aren't, at the same time I don't think there was ever a thinkpad with an UltraNav in 12'' or 13'' screen except X300.Padhead wrote:are there any r seies with 12 or 13 screen?
You should reconsider your demands.

Or reconsider your T30. Is UltraNav more important than a smaller screen and lighter weight?
Have: x60s ultralight 1705-CTO, Debian SiD, Linux 2.6.25-2 | x61s ultralight 7668-CTO, Debian SiD/Experimental, Linux 2.6.27-git5 | Model M 1391401, white label, 07-17-91

Smallest screen to fit your requirements is a 14 inch T4x, if you must have a touchpad. The X2x and X3x are a better fit if you can train yourself get used to the trackpoint and how to use its force-based acceleration (this seems to confuse most new users, and quite understandably so!). The trackpoint in the hands of an experienced user can be very quick and precise, but this is a personal choice.
Also consider the 12 inch Dell Latitude D400. These are cheap business class Pentium M systems that have a touchpad and take 2GB of RAM.

I basically took the 5v power from the USB port, put it through a 100ohm resistor and a switch, and ran two wires up to the 1.8mm LEDs that I installed into the bezel (I drilled holes and hot-glued the LEDs to the inside). Here are some better photos:gator wrote:James, that looks great. How did you do this?

I haven't played much with the R30 that I do have. I can't see the external monitor and haven't had much time to fiddle with it.
I was assuming by the overviews that they would take the 1GB RAM.
And the screen size differences is due to the hinges and bezel adapting to the smaller/larger size.
I haven't played with a T23 either, but if its like the T21 and T22 (minus the BOD), I agree it's build quality is good. Once I get mine running I'll be able to compare the two.

Having owned both R30 and T23 (and still have T23), I can say from first hand experience (ran many tests) that R30 is DEAD SLOW compared to T23.
Reason is that it uses Ali chipset and is built by Acer.
