Disable SMART on Fujitsu Drives

#1 Post by makai » Fri Mar 28, 2008 7:34 am

Did a search, but no joy!

Anyone know where I can find a Fujitsu utility that allows enabling/disabling SMART. I thought I had a floppy that had a utility on it, but I can't find it now.

Hitachi has the Feature Tools, and while it does recognize Fujitsu drives, it won't work to change the SMART functionality.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Ironic that you post this as I am running the Hitachi Drive Fitness Tool on a Fujitsu drive that has smart errors...lol

I will be watching, waiting for a response...

Why would you want to turn off SMART?

Maybe it's because the SMART error message is very annoying (one has to press F1 to pass the error during boot) even when the hard drive has been working fine for a long time since the error occurred.(in my case my WD 160GB desktop drive had this error since 2006)

I know in some Dell's computer BIOS you can disable SMART reporting but obviously it won't help in OP's case.

Because SMART is irritating... it's noisey... and when it's a quite night, I hate hearing the constant tick-tick-tick as it's doing it's thing.
SMART is the reason I stopped buying WD drives way back when 6.4Gb was considered huge!

I have never had a hard drive fail... ever! (knocking on wood right now!) I've probably been lucky, but then again, I turn off SMART on every drive I have... save the Fujitsu (since I lost the floppy I think I once had)

So... it makes them quieter...? How?

My Seagate 7200RPM drive is quieter than my Hitachi 5400RPM drive, and the HDD light is often off.

Maybe it's the brand you're using (just a guess)

SMART is a on-disk utility that runs a scan every so often... normally during disk idle time. Disabling SMART will make the disc quiet because the utility won't run.

Some drives are quieter than others... Fujitsus are actually very quiet, but SMART noise also depends on the size of the drive. A 40gb drive takes a shorter time to scan than a 120gb drive, so while scanning the 120gb drive, the ticking sound that occurs is more evident because it lasts longer. Like I mentioned, it's only during quiet times that it's noticeable. When the TV is on, you wouldn't even notice it... but you will see the disk activity indicated by a blinking disk access light. It's not a brand thing, all drives make a ticking sound when SMART is running... you just might not notice it as much.

To me it's just irritating, so I disable it.
