Always (almost) wireless with 7 Mbit

#1 Post by koden » Thu Apr 03, 2008 8:23 am

In denmark we have a company that sels a pcmcia card that use 3G networks to get a download up to 7 Mbit.

I can just buy a card like this...
But is it possible to upgrade my T40 or my T60 with a internal card, like some of the new laptops have?

I already have a built in wireless card.

T40 2373-14G

something like this HP have...

well the T40 no but the T60 probably with hacks. The T60 has 2 PCI Express slots inside so one is for the WLAN and the other is for the WWAN. You can stick one in there but of-course you'd need antenna's and all that plus the hacks.

However, that is if they make Mini-PCI-e cards. If they only make the PCMCIA or ExpressCard versions then that's what you'll have to use.

Edit - as you can see it's a Sierra Wireless MC8775 module which Lenovo also sells. You can find them on eBay also and then check out the T60 Bios Mod thread from Zender to get the hack to make it work if needed.

Internal WWAN 3G cards are basically for the later mini PCI-E specification, which the T4x series laptops don't support.

The T60 does support PCI-E and you may have some options there but it is not a straightforward excercise to install WWAN into a ThinkPad that wasn't equipped for it from the factory.

Have a look at the "no 1804" thread in the T6x forum

Just to be sure...what we in denmark calls Super3G is the same as you call WWAN 3G ?
Wireless 3G with up to 7,2 Mbit (at the moment).

The same as some of the new lenovo laptops have built in?

So what I need is a bios upgrade (crack) and then a minipci card with a WWAN 3G sim card, and a antenna and I will be running WWAN on my T60?

At the moment I have this and it's very good, but a USB cable sticking out with this modem at the end is'nt very nice and practice... :-)

Which lenovos og the new ones have WWAN built in?

Maybe yes, maybe no.

3G UTMS/HSDPA can operate on a number of different bands (typically 850MHz, 900MHz, 1900MHz and 2100 MHz) but not all cards cover all bands, so firstly you need to determine whether the standard Lenovo European 3G card covers the band(s) that your SuperG service operates on. The Lenovo European card isnormally supplied for use on Vodaphone 3G networks, but that doesn't mean it can't be used with other 3G networks.

I had a look at the 3 Easylink web site you linked, but couldn't find any mention of what band the service operates on in Denmark.... but that may have been more an issue with my guessing at what the various Danish language links might mean and so looking a the wrong web pages!.

As far as I can tell, the USB device offered by 3 Easylink in Denmark is tri-band HSDPA/UMTS (2100/1900/850 MHz bands).

Anyway, once you have worked out what bands you need, then you need to determine if the SuperG service provider(s) support a "bring your own device" approach rather than restricting device access to devices they have supplied themselves. As far as I'm aware in Australia where I live "3" does allow "bring your own device" access but it might be different in the Danish market.

If you get past those two hurdles, you should be OK.

Cheers,

Bill

3 DK seems to have standard 2100MHz 3G/UMTS. So you need card which supports 2100MHz 3G/UMTS and also correct antennas.
Adding antenna to the display isn't really easy if you haven't disassembled notebooks before, and it will protrude from it (new ThinkPads have off-center displays to make room for it...)

I now have my 3G UTMS/HSDPA dongle HUwaei 220...not from 3 but from TDC (the old danish tele company).

I most use it with my T42, and as I have read build in is not possible...
So the best way to have it must be a PCMCIA card that only sticks a out a little bit...

Any idea of pcmcia models that i can use????
