Close But No Seegar

#1 Post by ArtShapiro » Fri Apr 04, 2008 2:50 pm

Not really a question here, but some sympathy would go well!

Got an X61 a couple weeks ago from the Outlet, and the warranty showed as expiring on 3/20/08, the date that the unit was shipped to me. It was received on 3/25.

I called a couple days later, and was told to let the system work things out, and that this was typical behavior; the warranty would magically appear in a few days.

Well, it didn't. I spent over 2 hours Wednesday with four different Lenovo and IBM sites, in Atlanta, North Carolina, Canada, and Bangalore. Got transferred several times, had to make several calls, and had to fax several sets of documents to the "Entitlement" folks. Everyone was super nice and helpful, but it was surely a long morning. Eventually it was agreed that the problem would be fixed and that the one year warranty would correctly change within a day or two.

And they're right - it changed this morning: to December 28th of this year!

I'm not looking forward to another few hours on the phone.

Well, I'd hope a one year warranty would be from the date of receiving the unit (3/25 - 2009) but at this point I'd settle for 3/20.

I had pretty much the same thing happen to me with the warranty on an outlet machine, although I made PDF's of my confirmations so I just e-mailed rather than faxed. Spoke with a gentleman down at the entitlement department who fixed the problem.

Although in my case at first the updated warranty info showed an extra few months of coverage, not missing a few months as for you. That cleared itself up in a few days, although I sure wouldn't have minded the extra warranty. Perhaps it will clear up for you as well? Although I'd assume they'd be more proactive about my sort of glitch than yours.

Well I hope that works out in the end. Did you at least get a good bargain? Was it worth the hassle? For the savings I got on my machine I sure consider the trouble worthwhile.

And I ended up not even using the base warranty they gave me... just bought a 3 year on-site upgrade, which together is still way below the cost of the same system with base warranty at the main site.

Well I thought I did, at about $823 before tax for a fairly well-equipped unit, until last week where some X61s at less than $500 apparently appeared briefly according to some posts here.

Interestingly, when my credit card statement appeared, it was twenty bucks more than the invoice. I called (of course) and established that the web site invoice was wrong, and the actually-charged amount did, in fact, reflect my local sales tax amount plus a mysterious $6 California "recycling fee". I think they might have actually remitted the difference, but I felt that if the ultimate amount happened to be correct, they should simply fix the web server to show the correct amount.

My previous T20, T23, T30, and T42 purchases have been either eBay or via private transaction; have to say they were less hassle. Of course, I also got ripped off on the very first attempt to buy a TP on eBay - a 570. Guess ya can't win 'em all.

So, it has a year's warranty? Just trying to clarify as your original note didn't say what the warranty length was supposed to be.

Whoops - yeah - I try to be descriptive and failed this time! The folks at Lenovo have unanimously agreed that this particular unit has a one year warranty. Apparently some Outlet machines have a 90 day warranty, and some seemingly have no warranty whatsover. (The latter strikes me as a very risky purchase, although I suppose one could always return the unit if it were dead out of the box.)
