IBM Onsite service for LCD replacement

#1 Post by admsteiner » Wed Dec 08, 2004 1:28 pm

Hey,

I've noticed a slight darkening of my LCD (14.1" SXGA on my T42) above the LED for the num lock and caps lock. I'll be calling IBM to get it fixed/replaced.

I have the next day onsite service (and yes, I do have the thinkpad protection plan). I was wondering if anyone has had experience with their onsite service and how that experience went.

Adam,

It normally works very well. The tech should show up with a replacement LCD for your machine and, if he agrees that your's is defective, he'll swap it out on the spot.

Thanks James.

I'd like to think it's just the ribbon cable or something, but I'm afraid it isn't. The only question now is whether or not I do it right before I leave the country or when I get back (taking a 3 week trip out).

Thanks again,

James, one more question if I may...

Do you know at what point they will consider an LCD defective? Mine has a slight darkening, I noticed it (it appeared suddenly) as did a friend of mine when I told him to look at the screen (but didn't point out the problem). It's about an inch and a half high and an inch wide (its not rectangular, just giving rough dimensions).

I'd hate to call up IBM, have them send a tech out and then have him not swap the LCD out.

Given your description, it sounds like the backlight or the reflector has shifted. Either way I'd call them to come out and have a look at it.

You'll find that the techs are very amenable to swapping devices that might be considered marginal.

They get paid more for a swap than a simple service call.
