Suggestions for external 24" (WUXGA) LCD?

I'm thinking about getting an external 24" WUXGA LCD for my T60p w/Advanced Mini Dock.
Any suggestions (especially for under $400 - the price of a Samsung 245BW at Costco)?

i'd vote for the thinkvision L220x (which uses a samsung PVA panel) but it might not fit into your budget. they can be had for about $450 if you search around.

I know someone with a Westinghouse L2410NM. These use MVA panels in addition to being pretty good looking (IMO). Newegg has them for $410 shipped minus $50 MIR right now; they've been available for significantly less on sale before.

Thanks for the suggestion. A 22" WUXGA had been under my radar as I didn't know it existed. Certainly worthwhile checking out. Do you know of other 22" WUXGA displays? Thx.

i also have the westinghouse L2410NM, the MVA version. It's rumored that westinghouse has since changed over to TN panels though. It's great. Viewing angles and color reproduction are superb.

I also have a Soyo 24" 24DYLM24D6 (on sale at office max for $299). I have the 3ms (older) version which is the MVA panel. Beware that the models currently in production are TN (3ms) panels.. and are far inferior to the older versions.

They're both awesome, and would recommend them. I'm currently using the westinghouse as an HD tv, and the soyo as my desktop display.

the L220x is the only one. i doubt anyone will compete with it anytime soon since almost everyone already offers 24"/27" WUXGA displays where lenovo had the benefit of starting from scratch.

i'm a graphic/industrial designer, photographer, and part-time engineer so if the L220x wasn't up to scratch then it would have been gone already. so far it has survived on my desk for the entire 5+ months it's been on the market.

Thanks for the link, good to know in general. Fortunately, I qualify for the EPP pricing, which is still a little bit less. Unfortunately, going through Lenovo, the monitor will not ship for another 4+ weeks.

Great write-up and congrats on owning one of these. From what I've read and seen, I'd order the monitor immediately, if only it was available right away

I spoke too soon. While yesterday the shipping time was 4+ weeks, today it is 1-2 days!!!
Just called Lenovo and ordered one (supposedly they got a shipment of 65 units). Should be here soon

Could you please clarify, whether you think the MVA panel is the 3ms or the 6ms version? (Posts on FW seem to indicate that the 6ms version is the MVA panel)

6ms = MVA, 3ms = TN

I have 2 Samsung 226 BW's and an advanced MD. I love them. I got one for 250 and the other for 200

Look at the recent reviews an Anandtech. They like the Dell - but reviewed cheaper ones as well.

On erik's review and commentary about it, I this week ordered a Lenovo L220x LCD and positively love it. It's terrificly bright and the colors are vivid and bold--in some cases a little too much so--but following his general adjustment directions and those of others in the thread he links to containing his review will help get more from the display.

It might also help--a lot--to have the LCD calibrated, but I've not quite found the need to justify that measure at this point. I'm quite happy with the display after setting it to the sRGB profile and lowering the brightness to around 25. Others in the thread to which erik linked preach a little patience to become accustomed to the wider color gamut of the LCD, which I'm presently doing. I have no doubt I'll adjust to and continue to be thrilled with this display.

I've read Erik's massive thread as I have a L220x on the way (bought by my work

). There was mixed information in the thread, but if I read it correctly, I can run the L220x on my ThinkPad T43 at its maximum resolution of 1600x1200 and set it up so it won't stretch the image. Is that correct? I assume I will get black bars to the left and right of the image.

your T43 should be able to output the full 1920x1200 over VGA (assuming you're using VGA, of course). just make sure your video driver is up to date.

It's not listed in the support modes.

Ah... my video driver was very old: 30 November 2004 6.14.10.6497.

I have just installed the latest driver available from Lenovo: 21 June 2007 8.383.1.1000 but I still can't see 1920x1200 as a valid mode. Perhaps it is something to do with my current monitor: IBM P96.

One very annoying thing is it appears that the latest driver does seem to honour the colour profile generated by my GretagMacbeth eye-one display 2. My screen colour is woeful and very bright (not a L220x problem).

It is ATI Catalyst Control Center that is doing this. When I boot the ThinkPad it first has default settings and then I can see it switch to the correct colour profile and everything looks good. As soon as ATI Catalyst Control Center loads, it throws the colour profile away. Does anybody know how I can stop this?

OK...

First off I blew away the new driver and ATI software. Nothing I could do would let me have the calibrated profile. Once reverting everything was back to normal.

Second, my L220x arrived last night. WOW! It really is impressive. After installing the monitor driver on my T43, it worked fine (even with the old driver). I have since upgraded Presentation Director so I can set up a profile with 1920x1200, but other than that I didn't have to do much at all.

I calibrated with GretegMacbeth Eye-One Display 2 and it works quite well. Interestingly, using the advanced calibration I end up with Contrast at 100 and Brightness at 0. After calibration greens look a little too vibrant but maybe I'll get used to it.

I love the 1920x1200 for Lightroom, as I can have both side panels open and not lose anything from the image being worked on.
