CTRL key and switching between Thinkpad and other laptop?

#1 Post by lew2 » Fri Jun 27, 2008 2:02 pm

I'm a past Thinkpad user and considering returning to the fold later this summer with either a T61 or T400 depending on prices and availability. I've been using a small Compaq but it's getting long in the tooth and it's time to replace it.

I know if the Thinkpad were my only laptop there's be no issue with getting used to the CTRL/Fn key layout being reversed from Dell/HP. However my work laptop is a Dell and I have no choice in the matter. I'm concerned that switching back and forth would become annoying.

Anyone in a similar situation have any experience/thoughts you could share?

Thanks.

Well, I have one Dell (C610) and a bunch of TPs, and wasn't even aware of the keyboard difference prior to your posting!

Maybe it depends on how good a typist you are. I'm a relatively fast touch-typist, but on those fringe keys (FN, ALT, CTRL, and often SHIFT because of its small size making it easy to nail one of the others with one's pinkie) I simply have to stop and consciously look for the correct key. If you're good enough to bang 'em all fluently, I could see it being an issue.

When I get home from the salt mine, I'll have to see that they really differ.

My work system is an HP Compaq nc6220. My home systems are listed below. Switching between the two configurations is a non-issue.

I used a Dell D630 at my previous workplace, and numerous Thinkpads at home. I did hit the wrong key occassionally, but it wasn't frequent enough to classify as a problem.

I've seen references to Dell BIOS offering an option to swap Fn and Ctrl in hardware - you may want to check if your laptop has this option available (assuming you have access to the BIOS).

Thank you for the thoughts -- I'll just quit worrying about it as I guess I can manage.

FWIW, the Dell D610 I have for work does not have a BIOS provision for swapping CTRL & Fn. Maybe newer models do.

Thanks again.
