Do I have to wait for a new platform(Montevina)?

#1 Post by urlhttp » Tue Jul 08, 2008 3:14 pm

I need a new laptop, and think about T61 or T61p to buy. However, one of my friends said that new Centrino2 laptop platform is coming soon, so just wait until the new laptop platform released.
When these new laptops available? Does anybody know?
do I have to wait? I just need a new laptop right now for my work.

Yes, new models coming soon. T400 and T500 and others. If you google something like "lenovo T400" you should find some info.

I figure we'll see an announcement about these new models sometime in the next week or two. Anyone who knows for sure isn't talking, so this is all supposition.

As to waiting - that's completely up to you. If you need something "right now" then you probably don't have a choice in the matter.

I was thinking about the same thing when i bought my T61p and find the T9300 CPU to be really good. So i don't think there is a huge difference, but i'm not sure what is most important to you. I guess the new CPU's is a bit faster, a bit cooler and use less power, but i don't think the difference is huge. The T9300 CPU is alredy running fine without being very warm and i'm very happy with my T61p and heat/noise is very important to me. If you are waiting just for the new CPU i wouldn't bother, but if you like the T400/T500 better for some reasons you have to decide if you want to wait. I never really seen the models of course so hard to tell if it's worth the wait.

Very good points, Wiz. Someone considering a purchase really needs to evaluate their motives and requirements to see if it makes sense to pull the trigger now or wait.

In my case it's not a big deal to wait a little bit; what I have now will do fine for another couple of months if need be. I also likely save some money if I wait until first weekend in August to order due to an upcoming state sales tax holiday.

The things that intrigue me about the T400/T500 are the potential to use the P8600 cpu, LED backlit displays, and hybrid graphics. I don't know if that hybrid graphics will work smoothly or not, it'd be ideal to have discrete when docked and integrated when undocked.

Downside is the new ones are essentially Rev A systems and the current T61's have most of the issues pretty well worked out or worked around.

So I'm going to wait and see. Heck, I'm still running WinXP and didn't go to that from Win2k until XP SP2. I'm patient. ;)

If you need to do productive work right away and don't want to play guinea-pig, this is a very important factor to consider.
As for myself, I got my T61p just a couple of weeks ago and have yet to find any issue or problem (apart from the faulty RAM the laptop initially came with).

Also remember, any new models are probably going to be more expensive than the current models. That is, if price is a factor to you.
