Authorized Repair Centers / Bypassing Them

#1 Post by akao » Tue Jul 08, 2008 11:35 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know if its possible to bypass the authorized repair center? Or is anyone an authorized repair center that can help me out?

I am under warranty, have a case number. But I don't want to send my laptop away (or let Best Buy touch it, which they told me to do). Is it possible to just get the part, even though it is not considered a customer replaceable part.

Thanks.

Depending on the problem you are having and who you speak to it could be possible.

What is the problem with your ThinkPad?

What do you mean? who should I talk to?

The problem is that my X300 is not detecting the integrated web camera. Even the BIOS entry to disable and enable the integrated web camera is missing. I'm pretty sure the broken piece is either the camera itself or the cable from the camera to the system board.

Just send the machine in...stay away from Best Buy, though....

You're at risk of completely voiding the warranty on an expensive new ThinkPad if something goes wrong...not worth playing with IMHO.

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant was that when you call for service whomever you speak with there. I ddin't have anyone specific in mind.

Some helpful representatives may send a part which normally wouldn't be sent if you make a good case for yourself.

With your camera issue I would doubt very much you would get them to send you what you need. Do you know what you need?

There are several options for you.

1. You could upgrade to onsite support.

2. You could find a warranty service provider in your area:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-44986

3. You could just send it away. (What's the problem here? You're even allowed to remove the harddisk (which is even recommended by Lenovo if the harddisk has nothing to do with the problem)).

4. You could try to fix it yourself, which is a pretty bad idea. You'd lose the warranty on such an expensive notebook and you can't be sure that you can fix the problem yourself.

Thanks for the great help. I called tech support, and had them ship out the depot box. They confirmed that I can take out the hard drive. I originally wanted to repair it myself because I didn't want to go with out my X300. It's the computer with all my software installed on it. Time to see if I can boot a VM off that hard drive on another computer.

Ah geeze. The laptop has been in Lenovo hands for about a week, and has spent most of that time as holding for parts. I didn't see this happening. Is waiting my best option? Seems like they should've told me they were missing the part before telling me to ship it to the depot.
