Rough Performance Comparison - R60 v. T42

#1 Post by asiafish » Wed Jul 30, 2008 10:30 am

I've got two ThinkPads, one of which I will leave behind at my business and the other, faster one, I will take with me to iraq. Both feel fairly similar in performance, so I thought I'd chime in here and see if anyone has a better understanding of raw processing power than I do.

First off, both run Windows XP pro and have 1GB of RAM and 5400 RPM hard drives.

The R60 has a Celeron M 420 (Yonah) processor at 1.6GHz with a 1MB cache and 533 MHz frontside bus. It has an Intel GMA950 GPU that shares system memory. Both are 14" 4:3, with the T42 SXGA+ and the R60 XGA.

The T42 has a Pentium M (Dothan) processor at 1.7GHz with a 2MB cache and 400MHz frontside bus. It has an ATI Radeon GPU with 64MB of dedicated memory.

For surfing the web and word processing there is almost no difference between them. I do plan on using this for Skype calling and video conferencing through Yahoo, as well as watching DVD movies and iTunes video and music. Some older games might also be installed.

The T42 is obviously thinner and lighter, but the R60 has a DVDRW drive to the T42's combo drive. I would also need to buy a port replicator for the R60 if I left it for the office, while I've already got one for the T42.

Other than screen real estate, which won't matter much as I plan on using an external 20" LCD most of the time, is there likely to be significant performance differences on the applications described above? Are either of these machines up for full-screen video conferencing and internet telephony?

Technically the T42 is a tad faster, but it's not noticeable. I would base the decision on factors other than performance. For example, the Pentium M should run cooler and have longer battery life, assuming equivalent batteries. Reliability might be a factor as well.

Even though I personally do prefer the T42, I'd take the
R60 to a place where support services might not be
guaranteed.
With the T42 you have a higher risk of hardware failure
(e.g. Mobo-Flexing), than with the more modern and more
stable built R60.
