X301 is an extortionate T300

#1 Post by Dead1nside » Fri Aug 15, 2008 5:58 pm

Engadget - http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/15/leno ... b-ssd-sti/ - just reported that the X301 will have a DisplayPort connector...

So why is there not one on the T400? Let alone the non-existence of a T300.

It's almost like Lenovo are pushing us into paying top dollar for an underpowered but brilliant machine... why can't we sacrifice the size and weight for a cheaper package, equally as feature filled and with a bit more power?

So annoyed. Sorry, just ranting. I think I'm just going to wait a generation before I buy.

I think you might be on to something to be honest. I've got an X300 and think it's great but Lenovo do seem to be putting features onto their high end notebooks that really should be available across the range e.g. displayport. Not including the displayport on the T400 (but on the docking station) is out of order. I seriously doubt the reason given that apparently they couldn't fit into the 14" chassis but somehow can manage it on the X301.

I wonder how much a 128gb X301 will cost?

Display port should fit on T400 with no problem. But x301 is the high-end product of lenovo, while T400 is not, i think this is the reason.

128 GB SSD is really attractive, but will be expensive too. I expect the 80 GB SSD.

The most curious problem for me is the quality of the LED. If it is the same as the one on X300, i will just pay for less but geting a high performance of X200s. Lenovo should be aware that it's a $2500+ machine, which means the LED now on X300 is not accetpable.

I hear what you're saying. I think we'd all like an X300/301. However the solid-state disk drive isn't suitable for everyone and brings up the cost unnecessarily for those that don't need a laptop to fit in a manila envelope. So there's a gap in the product line.

If the T500 can have a DisplayPort and the X301 can... then why can't the T400?

And the fact that LED-backlit screens on the T400 especially are about as hard to come by as panning gold in a river these days it's as if you're forced to buy the X300. It's guaranteed an LED-backlight along with all the other features people are sorely missing.

I absolutely agree. No excuse for not having displayport on the T400. On the other hand - I ordered a W500 instead for pretty much that reason - so if this was savvy marketing. they got the extra $100 or so out of me.

One reason why lenovo did what they did could be this: T400 / T500 can use a docking solution which provides digital monitor output. x301 can not. You can already buy a used T60 compatible docking station for around 80 $ which provides DVI. T500 is that big, that it is mostly more used as a desktop replacement rather than a portable computer. Using a docking is not that usual for this heavy flagship. That's why it has digital output - and because it is large enough that there is place for another port.

Of course this is not explaining one thing. x300 does not have a digital monitor output. I really do not know why.

The X300 chipset does not support DisplayPort and there is not room for DVI. They could have used mini-DVI but that is pretty much Apple only.
