New Lenovo monitors....

#1 Post by georgema » Fri Sep 19, 2008 12:31 pm

Looks like Lenovo have announced some new monitors including a couple of 24" models: -

Look forward to seeing a review of the L2440x and how it compares to the competition.

Me too. From what I can tell the L2440x will be the first LED backlit non-TN 24" monitor on the market.

I just purchased an L220x 2 days ago and it is a wonderful monitor aside from the fairly high power consumption which also means high heat!

I'm waiting for these monitors to get into the Mbook, so that I can get the full specs, and understand their true qualities. :P

I've been shopping for a new LCD. The 24-inch L2440x looks very interesting with LED backlighting etc. I think I'll wait to make a decision until they come out ...

I don't understand why people are that focused on LED backlight hype, especially when it comes to desktop monitors. There is no significant image quality improvement just by different backlight. Also don't forget that Lenovo (HP, Dell ...) monitors are just average office quality monitors, nothing more. Most of them have general problem - overbrighted. You can not set that low brightness to work in dark environment comfortably. That's why professional monitors (Eizo, NEC) usually have the lowest luminance in the specs.

The most important thing is still the LCD panel technology and driver electronics. Serious models have backlight uniformity compensation. You still need it for LED backlight as well. I just want to notice that average monitor with LED backlight may be much worse than better one with CCFL.

LED allows for potentially much purer colors than CCFL, but I agree that it has little merit for the average monitor.

Some of Lenovo's monitors (L192p,L190x,L220x,L2440x) are quite nice. Not having a TN panel automatically makes them better than 95% of the monitors on the market, including everything that the major manufacturers (Samsung, LG) now throw into the market.

Oh, yes. I didn't say that Lenovo models are bad in their category. I just wanted to express that the effect of LED backlight on overall picture quality in this category is marginal. Again, a model with S-PVA panel and CCFL backlight is still 1000 times better than a TN panel with LED backlight.

Especially Samsung and LG monitors are tricky since Samsung is known to be producer of S-PVA panels and LG.Philips of x-IPS ones. Most of their monitor products are actually horrible boxes using "foreign" TN panels.

Of course. :)

Not always foreign. LG and Samsung also make a handful of TN panels of their own (and sometimes they also use AUO/CMO).

Both the L2440x (LED) and L2440p (CCFL) use a TN panel. The difference is readily apparent compared to the IPS panels in my Dell 2001FP as well as A21p and T60p.

My mistake, I thought the L2440x was also PVA. But the Mbook says otherwise.

I don't understand why people always must have the latest and greatest, regardless of if it is a good product or not.
I'd rather wait a year or so after something new comes out, until they produce Rev. 1 or higher, and have eliminated all the teething problems.
As a beneficial side effect, once they have been on the market for a while, the price will have come down!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
