Want to buy a thinkpad....need recommendations

#1 Post by sugarvfk » Tue Nov 25, 2008 2:08 pm

Several people have recommended that I buy a thinkpad....but I am illiterate as far as computers go! And everyone has their opinions, so this is what I am needing:

I need something that I can write papers on, for college. I also need a system that is capable of pretty good animation and video capabilities. I don't game, but need to use it for the interactive CD's that come with textbooks.

I also do a lot with photos. So, I don't have too many "requirements", but would like to buy one computer that will last me a while. I would prefer something that has a little more than what I need so that I don't have to worry about upgrading too quickly!

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

... and if you are looking for advice (and/or information) about ThinkPad's, you're certainly come to the right place!

For a start, I suggest you review the following recent "what-laptop-should-I-get" threads on this forum: A newbie question on which Thinkpad... and Thinkpad for my parents! and What ThinkPad should I get? and T42 and R52 what you recommend? and Another "Which Thinkpad should I get" thread... and after doing this, you may be in a bit better shape to go on.

Since you are (also) in the "Photo-business", I would suggest you (also!) read about ThinkPad's having LCD's (= displays) of the so-called FlexView/IPS type (only available in 15" R5x/T4x/T6x models), as their color fidelity is superb compared to non-FlexView's.

Congratulations with your hopefully soon-to-be new ThinkPad! :-)

If money and portability are not an issue, then get a W700.

Get the newest machine you can afford and do not get one without an LED screen which are vastly superior to non LED screens. T400's have LED's and the video cards are hybrid and can be disabled for battery life purposes..a good all around machine and I believe with the video card they support DVI out which means you can run a larger display when you are home.

The T400 with the LED is a nice machine. If you're on a more limited budget, the R61 from the Outlet Store offers great value.
