Infected with Personal Defender 2009: Help, help, help...!!!

#1 Post by julia » Sat Feb 07, 2009 12:41 am

I have gotten a weird virus or something on my computer. A friend was downloading something using bit torrents (whatever they are) and I think he turned off the firewall. Now I'm getting directed to something called DEFENDER-REVIEW all the time and my Outlook keeps crashing as does Firefox and... I don't know what else can go wrong. I went on Earthlink to retrieve my emails and the site was loaded with porn ads for enlarged you-know-whats. Earthlink!!! Then we tried downloading something to clean it up and it wouldn't. Ad-aware got all it could but the computer is still a mess. Avast isn't turning... Has anyone experienced this? I got Anti-Virus 2008 last year and Comcast took hours to clean it up. Any advice, prayers, appreciated. Thanks, all...

P.S. The thing just popped up. It's a window that says "Do you want to block this suspicious software. Name Win32.Zafi.B. Risk Level High. Zafi.B is a worm trojan program that records keystrokes and takes screen shots of the computer stealing financial information." The only think could can click is a tab that takes you to the DEFENDER-REVIEW software... Oh, well... at least there's no financial info on my computer!

The following threads suggests that DEFENDER-REVIEW and Win32.Zafi.B are related.

I would also suggest taking a look here as this recent thread contains some useful general information for fighting such things :)

Good luck

Thanks for your replies. You're right and, according to this site -- http://malwarecrypt.com/showthread.php?t=62 -- it is the Win32.Zafi.B virus and directions for removing it include shuting down all wifi in the house. It seems daunting and I'm not sure I can do it. It appears this virus has been around for awhile. Thanks for your links and I'll let you know what happens.
